I don't know about the economy as a whole, but for me this just turned into a double dip recession. After being out of work last fall I found a job in January -- but sales just fell off a cliff and the company (an online healthcare information company) is shutting down at the end of the month.
It seems I loose my job every time the economy goes south. I lost my jobs in the 90's and 2001 recessions as well as the most recent, and looking at the employment numbers, I'm afraid it might be happening again.
Check out the chart below.
The dotted red line shows jobs without the Census temporary jobs. (You can see the original here.)It's not a pretty site.
So, despite Obama's efforts, I'm back to no healthcare for me or my kids. I hadn't recovered financially yet, and I fear my house my soon join the foreclosure crisis. And I don't see anyone in Congress who's interested or concerned with Jobs. Instead, my State government is preparing to do mass layoffs itself to balance the budget. I'm sure that will help.
The media is obsessed with oil spills, somewhat understandably, but unless hiring picks up soon I think the mid-term elections will be difficult. After all, the census jobs will end before then -- as will a lot of peoples unemployment benefits.
I'd love to find the HS Councilor who told me computers would be good career and punch him in the nose, except I'm not sure any other jobs are doing better. But at least in other professions being 44 isn't too old to hire like it seems to be in IT.
