Notice how the media do not report anything anymore on the Haiti story? Been there, done that? There was a small story the other day in our paper about Bill Clinton's frustration at the slowness of the Haiti recovery. A picture accompanied the story showing a tent city of large proportions. The question posed in the article? What will happen if a hurricane strikes here?
Oh, and meanwhile, cruise ships are still docking and partying on the lovely coast of Haiti that remained intact after the earthquake. This begs the question: Why has the coverage of Haiti stopped? Because the media cannot cover more than one big story at the same time.
We now have the oil spill. That's where ALL the media's resources are going now. Do we ever hear about Iraq anymore? Afghanistan slips in and out of the news, depending on who said what in Congress or in the military. Deaths of soldiers? Relegated to the back pages in the newspaper. Old news I guess. Then the Gaza flotilla happened and that became a few day's news.
Never mind that the MSM do not cover stories as a continuum: whenever a story is on the front pages and leads the TV news, there is no in-depth reporting. Just talking points and snippets. The exceptions are Rachel Maddow on the TV and Amy Goodman on the radio. But most people in our undereducated and apathetic country do not even know who these who these people are? Shit, 65% of the public cannot name ONE Supreme Court justice, according to the latest poll.
Talking to people, I always come to the same conclusion. My "conservative" friends are uninformed, opinionated, and wrong most of the time...they just parrot right-wing media. Facts mean nothing. But we all know that....
I don't know how to fix it. Does anyone?
