When I refer to Obama's FAIL, I am referring to the speech he gave from the Oval Office last night. The speech was a FAIL. It gave us little or no new information or assurances. After the speech, many (including myself), asked themselves, "What the hell was THAT?"

My first response was, "He didn't say anything. He just repeated shit we already know. WTF?"

This got me thinking. I know Obama is a sharp guy and I know he has a knack for giving great speeches when great speeches are needed. So, why, during the most important issue he has faced so far, did he fail so miserably at saying the right thing?

It just doesn't make sense. Unless you really think about it...

More below...

I have a theory about how Obama is handling this crisis and why he's handling it the way he is. I don't know if my theory is correct, but it would explain a lot of the things we've seen this administration do over the last two months. Here's the theory in a nutshell...

FACT #1 - The U.S. Government does not have the resources to push BP out of the way and take over the operation of capping the well and cleaning the Gulf.

FACT #2 - It is possible that this disaster could force BP into bankruptcy. Not saying it will or won't happen, just that it is possible.

FACT #3 -  BP could tell the U.S. to go fuck itself, and then point the finger at Haliburton or Transocean while tying it up in the courts for ten years. Despite the fact that they are lying assholes, they haven't given us the middle finger yet.

So, with the circumstances as they are, what would be the likely result of Obama going on TV and telling America that BP is criminal and that they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law?

The likely result is that BP would have to ask itself, "Why are we even bothering?" Then, they'd gather up their fleet and their boom and leave, wishing us the best of luck. If they're dammed if they do and dammed if they don't, then why would they even try?

I think Obama realizes that...

  1. We need BP at least until the well is capped.
  1. The best way to get money out of BP is to not threaten them.

If you think about it, this is probably the smartest approach to getting financial help for the communities affected and probably the fastest way to get the well capped.

Unfortunately, since it requires being polite to BP, it makes bad politics for Obama with the American people.

Now, does this answer a lot of questions as to why Obama is acting the way he is acting?

I think so. But I may be wrong and maybe Obama is just completely incompetent. I hope not.

Thanks for reading.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
