My first diary and a letter to President Obama I have recently e-mailed.
I’ve never written a letter such as this before. I’ve always considered myself a patriot and good citizen. I believe that the core principle of this country is that anyone, from any background, from any disposition, can and should have the opportunity to realize their dream. So long as their dream doesn’t infringe on the freedom and natural rights of his or her fellow citizens.
The reason I have suddenly been motivated to contact my president is to share my thoughts on the current and future state of the Gulf coast. While spending time with my father this weekend we talked about the crisis. During our discussion I hypothesized potential solutions and developed a rough plan of action.
First, once the spill has finally been capped and oil is no longer erupting from the ocean floor, I propose you put together a public works bill that would make FDR proud. Let’s put together a giant American work force program to clean up this mess. We need to make sure these workers are properly equipped with necessary safety gear such as respirators, etc. When it comes time for cleanup worker salaries to be paid, let’s make sure British Petroleum foots the bill. While we’re at it, lets make sure the safety and cleanup equipment used by the workers are ALL small businesses or American based companies. Don't forget, BP pays the whole bill for salaries and equipment. Not a single penny of American tax dollars should be spent on the cleanup. I’m no economist, but this program could be a huge boost to economy and bring more money back into our country.
Dream scenario: This program be included as part of a much broader energy bill with emphasis on green technologies such as solar, wind, and ocean current technologies (underwater wind farms!)
Thank you kindly for taking the time to read this and I hope that a humble contribution from one of the “little” people makes it to your desk.
