"AmericaSpeaks: Our Budget, Our Economy" is a national discussion about our federal budget.
This event will be held on June 26, 2010. You can participate via Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Myspace.
More importantly, you can attend meetings that will be broadcast by satellite video and webcast.
You can also volunteer to host your own Town Meeting. Here is a link to the website, which will give you all the information about participating:
America Speaks: Our Budget, Our Economy
More after the fold.
According to their website:
"AmericaSpeaks is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization with the mission to reinvigorate American democracy by engaging citizens in the public decision-making that most impacts their lives."
They are funded by Peter G. Peterson Foundation, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
The minority voices that scream for lower taxes and deficit reduction to the expense of everything except our bloated Defense budget need to be countered. I would hate to see teabaggers usurp the entire discussion.
This "conversation" needs to hear from people like us. We need to speak out against Bush's insane tax cuts for the uber-rich. We need to make clear that our communities cannot survive without basic services: Schools, police, firefighters, libraries and infrastruce. We need to point out the cost of the wars, and the bloated Defense budget. We need to be heard, lest the "Don't tax anybody, let charities handle feeding and housing the poor" dominate the debate.
This is a list of cities that will be hosting the event. If you can make the time to come in person to one of these, it would be great:
Albuquerque, NM
Augusta, ME
Casper, WY
Chicago, IL
Columbia, SC
Dallas, TX
Des Moines, IA
Detroit, MI
Grand Forks, ND
Jackson, MS
Los Angeles, CA
Louisville, KY
Missoula, MT
Overland Park, KS
Philadelphia, PA
Portland, OR
Portsmouth, NH
Richmond, VA
Silicon Valley, CA
Please consider attending, either virtually or in person. It is important that our side of the argument gets heard.
Thanks.
