Dear Friends and Supporters,
I awoke this morning to find an email in my inbox regarding a fundraiser this evening for Rep. Sally Kern. The email was forwarded to me by a friend, and appears to be from a group called “Reclaim Oklahoma.” (Rather than provide my description of this group, you can view their description and draw your own conclusions.)
More below the fold...
Though the group claims to have “no membership list” and “no dues paying members,” apparently somebody takes care of the website and sends out emails. Based on the events they’ve hosted in the past, it would appear that Rep. Kern is a key figure in the group, and possibly one of the leaders. According to a search of whois.net, the website for the group is registered to Dan Davis of Edmond, OK and according to an article in The Edmond Sun, the group was founded by Pastor Paul Blair, a close ally of Rep. Kern—the two of them have appeared at multiple events together over the last few years.
In the days since last September, when I first announced my intention to run for the state legislature in House District 84, Rep. Kern has stated to the press on numerous occasions that she does not plan to make an issue of my gender, most recently telling the Tulsa World in a story dated June 9, 2010, “There is so much we disagree on policywise that that is enough for us to debate on.”
Yet, here we are, barely two weeks since the filing period for candidates has passed and Rep. Kern’s promise to make this campaign about the issues appears to have already been broken. Unless of course, when Rep. Kern said this race would be about “the issues” she meant “the issue of the radical homosexual agenda.”
You see, the email sent out by Reclaim Oklahoma (which appears to be closely affiliated with Rep. Kern) notes that tonight’s event features a guest speaker known for anti-gay activism, and to top it off contained the following quote (the full email can be found at the end of this diary):
In case you missed it, the homosexual lobby has recruited an individual that has had a sex change operation to run against Rep. Kern. The homosexual lobby from across America will be pouring money into this local race in an attempt to make a statement to the country by knocking out an outspoken Christian, pro-family representative. If they succeed, it will serve as a warning shot across the bough of all elected officials who defend Biblical values. Even if this is not your district, this race will effect [sic] you! Once a person is elected to the legislature, their voting impacts ALL Oklahomans.
The first interesting thing about this quote is the assertion that I was recruited to run against Rep. Kern by “the homosexual lobby.” Nothing could be further from the truth, and in fact, I have not even been endorsed by any LGBT rights groups at this point. I’m running for office because for the last six years, Rep. Kern has used her position of responsibility to the voters of HD 84 and Oklahoma in general as a platform to push her own social agenda. She is out of touch with mainstream Oklahoma values, ineffective as a legislator, and has been called “bad for business” by Oklahoma’s leading business newspaper, The Journal Record.
I believe the voters of HD 84 deserve a representative that will work to help small businesses create jobs, work to attract new business to Oklahoma, ensure that all of our children have access to a great education, and ensure that our transportation infrastructure is well maintained and providing the basis for economic development.
Interestingly, Reclaim Oklahoma’s email advertising Rep. Kern’s event failed to mention any of these real issues that face the voters in our district. Just today, I was inspecting areas of State Highway 66 (old Route 66) which runs through the heart of HD 84, and there were huge potholes that desperately need attention. Yet all Rep. Kern and her allies can think of is “the homosexual agenda.”
With your help, we can continue the momentum that has clearly put Rep. Kern on the defensive, reaching out to voters to let them know they can choose a Representative who cares about THEIR issues. Oklahoma’s families and small businesses deserve better!
Please go to www.brittany4hd84.com today to contribute to the campaign. We have raised about $27,000 so far (with about $8,000 of that coming in the last 2 weeks). Your contribution will help us reach our goal of $100,000 so that we can execute the plan my campaign manager and volunteers have developed to sway the 950 or so votes that will ensure victory in November.
One thing both Reclaim Oklahoma and I can agree on is that “Once a person is elected to the legislature, their voting impacts ALL Oklahomans.” Let’s show Rep. Kern that we will no longer tolerate the irresponsible way that she has used her position in the legislature, which has done serious damage to Oklahoma’s reputation around the country and hampered business development in Oklahoma City, thus hurting ALL Oklahomans.
Can you contribute $15 today? $30? $100? Thanks for your continued support!
Sincerely,
Brittany M. Novotny
