I don't know about you, but I plan on watching the US soccer team play against Ghana later today. In fact, I want to watch all the matches (Germany vs. England promises to be a classic).
But, according to Glenn Beck, I must be un-American, for Americans Hate soccer and hate the World Cup:
Speaking on behalf of "Real Americans" Beck said:
"We don’t want the world cup. We don’t like the World Cup. We don’t like soccer. We don’t want anything to do with it. You can package it any way. You can spend all kinds of money. You can force it on our television sets. We will not enjoy the World Cup."
And Glenn Beck is not alone. It turns out that many luminaries of the conservative movement hate soccer. Here is convicted felon Gordon Liddy:
"Whatever happened to American exceptionalism? This game . . . originated with the South American Indians and instead of a ball, they used to use the head, the decapitated head, of an enemy warrior."
On the other hand, I have found one group of American conservatives who celebrate soccer: academic racists. The white-hooded intellectuals over at Alternative Right see the failure of the African teams to advance as proof that "black men can't kick". Here is ueber-racist Steve Sailer:
In reality, soccer, both at the international superstar level and at the park league level in America, is whiter than football, basketball, or baseball.
For example, the last World Cup was won by Italy’s all white team. In America, this would be considered scandalous.
Well, Italy is gone, and, should Ghana win, what will Sailer say? The World Cup is a celebration of diversity. The American team is multi-racial,as are all the remaining European teams. I salute the great athletes and may the best teams win!
