Lots of Hullabaloo of about the R2K polls being bogus and what not. Its all much ado about nothing and Kos should apologize. The great statistical masters don't know what they're talking about.
Here's how it works.
Take the example table that Weissman, Weissman and Greber cite as their great example....
6/3/10 Favorable Unfavorable Undecided
Question Men Women Men Women Men Women
Obama 43 59 54 34 3 7
Pelosi 22 52 66 38 12 10
Reid 28 36 60 54 12 10
McConnell 31 17 50 70 19 13
Boehner 26 16 51 67 33 17
Cong. (D) 28 44 64 54 8 2
Cong. (R) 31 13 58 74 11 13
Party (D) 31 45 64 46 5 9
Party (R) 38 20 57 71 5 9 .
Notice that each pairing of numbers adds up to an even number. The reason for this is simple. When the numbers are first calculated they are not broken out by gender so they would show up like this for example...
Favorable Unfavorable Undecided Total
Obama 50 45 5 100%
Notice the total is 100%. But what we really need is 100% of men and 100% of women which equals 200% so we multiply by two.
Favorable Unfavorable Undecided Total
Obama 100 90 10 200%
Now notice that all of the numbers are even, just like we see displayed in our table. So to break out the numbers between men and women we simply calculate the percent of men favorable. If that number turns out to be an even number, and we subtract it from the even numbers in our 200% table, we will always end up with an even number for women. If it is odd then we get an odd number for women.
No great mystery. See the Cat? See the Cradle?
Update: Look folks having 776 out of 778 pairs is a stronger demonstration of correlation than it is of fraud. Even somebody making up numbers would mismatch even/odd 10% of the time.
This is simply Occam's Razor put into action.
Aside from that it isn't fair to the owners of R2K to call them fraudsters if their polling and math isn't that great but they're not really frauds.
Update 2: Look folks. For those who don't think this makes sense, add up the lines in the chart. Each line will add up to 200. I apologize for the chart being out of whack but that is how it came over.
