from here in my hospital bed. I am going to bring back the framing idea that I've been pushing in the last few election cycles. So if some of you see this as a repeat, please accept a big nevermind from me But I do believe that this idea is absolutely crucial toward winning the debate on immigration in the state of California.
I can sum up the point. Our opponents lie when they talk about an amnesty, and no Democrat has ever proposed anything like an amnesty. What has been proposed in various forums is a plea bargain Not only is a plea bargain very different from amnesty, but especially in its emotional content. People view amnesty as getting away with something, but view a plea bargain as a reasonable accommodation to a messy situation, sparing our court system a flood of expensive and lengthy activity. It should be obvious to everyone that some sort of plea bargain is needed regarding those who are in technical violation of the law regarding immigration. The legitimate question is, what should the terms of the plea bargain be. That is something that should be open to discussion in the political arena. And I have no specific suggestions on the best deal.
it is up to Jerry Brown to determine what specific plea bargain should be put in place for immigrants. This is a question of his political platform. My own inclination is that some sort of community service should be required. For those who wish to remain in this country and are lacking documentation.
I urge all of you to be very carefully in your diaries and comments to draw the distinction between amnesties and plea bargains. the Democratic Party should issue a directive to all of its candidates to do the same.
When the issue is raised, our side should consistently ask a question of what sort of plea bargain does the other side find to be appropriate.
I apologize for the brevity of this diary, but I think that the issue is of such importance that he deserves our careful attention. I'm using voice recognition from my hospital bed and apologize for any garbled statements found their way into this diary. I remain a lousy proofreader, and that has nothing to do with any illnrss.
