"Death in the Gulf." BP and Halliburton committing ecocide.

This WineRev Model series provides a home for pics and vids. WineRev covered the 2009 Senate recount with a delightful 157 diary series. "Recounting Minnesota" at Amazon

Meanwhile, following its "1,000 gallons a day" lie, Coast Guard and BP referenced this map showing quick, clean flushing for the Gulf of Mexico:

LC fantasy

No-no-no-no-no-no-no..... In deep water circular currents makes flow patterns quite complicated.

Greenpeace is brilliant:

More below :::

Research on the deep water flows of the Gulf of Mexico measured flows that do not resemble the simplistic media map.

Normal summer deep water flows

Even surface-based guesstimates look much more complicated and unstable:

philip-lutzak complex deep water cycles

The problem with the multiple cycles is that cyclone and anti-cyclones in the deep water currents will combine to delay appearance of this oil spew at the surface.

Waves and wind must bring the oil down to the main Loop Current, then out to the Florida Straits. But the estimates, now, go to a 95% reappearance in a time line of 6 months to 5 years.

Here is the NOAA map for Florida Straits currents.

Straits currents - NOAA

What seems indicated is that spurts of oil spew will be moved into the Loop Current, then on to the Straits current system. And that this will recur for at least 5 years.

Meanwhile the 1.694 MM gallons -- figure from BP by way of Scarce -- of dispersant have changed oil to this:

disperant treated oil congealed by wind action - Gay-Getty

And these wind-coagulations are all over the place:

more coagulation - Gay-Getty

I looked at the Greenpeace images. Will return later and post several to the comments.

And of course:

Pogo never met BP, Halliburton, or the GOPer and DINO sell-outs.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:

      beyond petroleum

And the scale of the current oil sheen and coagulation area:

      Greenpeace-Google map

Greenpeace offers a plan for sustainable energy:

Every day, millions of people whose stories you won’t hear are suffering the direct effects of our addiction to fossil fuels. Asthma, cancer, mutilated ecosystems, devastated communities — these are the hidden costs of our backward energy system, and we’re paying those costs right now, whether we know it or not.

Unfortunately, the worst is yet to come. According to the Nobel prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, we must peak global warming pollution by 2015 and nearly eliminate it by mid-century.
The threat of climate change demands nothing short of an Energy Revolution — a transformation that has already started, as renewable energy markets exhibit huge and steady growth. At the core of this revolution will be a change in the way that energy is produced, distributed and consumed. The five key principles behind this shift will be to:

      • Implement renewable solutions, especially through decentralized energy systems
      • Respect the natural limits of the environment
      • Phase out dirty, unsustainable energy sources
      • Create greater equity in the use of resources
      • Decouple economic growth from the consumption of fossil fuels

The .pdf format format report for download is energy [r]evolution.

Oddly, the Greenpeace horror stories from 1995-2010 before this blow out are starting to sound optimistic. Greenpeace seemed to think that we had time to work things out.

Now you have to be as dumb as Haley Barbour, R_idiot_MS, to think that "We'll defend our habitats." The little harbor booms are useless in 2-foot waves and the best BP has deployed at the beaches are useless in 3-foot waves.

It would cost $ 20,000,000,000 and take more than a year to build a berm-and-blocker system to contain 4-foot waves. Then this system would fail to human error and to any strong tropical storm.

There's no "defending." The deed is done. The axe is falling.

Loop Current rings and the deep circulation in the Gulf of Mexico

Coastal Studies Institute, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge

        Masamichi Inoue

Coastal Studies Institute and Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge

A detailed examination of the three-dimensional circulation associated with Loop Current rings in the Gulf of Mexico has been made using the Modular Ocean Model with 15 levels in the vertical and ⅛° horizontal grid spacing. Monthly mean wind stress and a seasonal boundary condition on temperature and salinity fields are applied at the surface. The vertical shear and geostrophic transport of the Yucatan Current also vary seasonally. The upper layer seasonal circulation, and the formation, structure, and westward migration of Loop Current rings in the model compare favorably with observations. An anticyclone-cyclone pair develops in the deep layer beneath the Loop Current as a ring is forming in the eastern Gulf. The model circulation beneath the Loop Current reverses from anticyclonic to cyclonic because the anticyclone leads the pair in the deep layer as the ring separates and migrates westward in the surface layer. The deep anticyclone-cyclone pairs are guided by the bottom bathymetry as they migrate westward in tandem with the rings in the surface layer. The deep anticyclone decays more quickly than the cyclone in the western Gulf, and the cyclone dominates the deep circulation beneath the ring. Cyclonic flow in the deep Gulf of Mexico has been observed using current meters, inferred from hydrographic data, and produced in other numerical and theoretical models. Although the formation and westward migration of deep anticyclone-cyclone pairs in conjunction with rings has not been directly observed, the results of this modeling study agree with other published reports on the deep circulation in the Gulf of Mexico.

The clean sand covering the oil is in Pensacola, Grand Isle and now Orange Beach is wave driven. Well, it was good until the lie got busted. I hope to see SaveOurShoresFlorida back on Olberman. What great heros they are.

        That's out of American football.

        This is brain-dead cheating.

Simpler, cheaper, effective -- the alternative would have been to pick up the oil-bearing layer and have it incinerated.

That is not even difficult. The oil hadn't been there for more than a couple of days.

This craziness will delay competent work and force higher remediation costs, due to having to deal with 10 times the volume of poisoned sand.

BTW: Could we at least get to bury Jindal and Barbour up to their necks in it ???

        Pretty please..............
