Dear Democratic Party Establishmment, including but not limited to President Obama:
Go on: Touch Social Security. I double god-damn dare you. Raise the retirement age. Lower benefits. And meanwhile, keep spreading lies about the need to "fix" the system in this manner.
This will be the ultimate act of betrayal. You will have shown yourselves to be no different than the Republicans. And, at that point, the endless debate about whether we should "prevent the Republicans from taking back Congress" will be irrelevant, because there won't be a god-damn difference between you and the Repubicans.
At that point, the Republicans won, and if they are going to rule us, then they might as well run the fucking Congress.
Let me be plain: I don't want the Republicans to take over. I've given money to the cause. I've helped candidates. I supported President Obama, and, when he disappointed me, I've made my disappointment plain, but I've never actively worked against him. This latest threat to Social Security, however, is one bridge too far.
Yeah, I'm one of those disgruntled Democrats which keep getting discussed on the front bages in meta diaries. Your supporters on this site are always careful to point out how important it is that we prevent the Republicans from taking back Congress, because they'll impeach President Obama on some bullshit, trumped-up charge, and who wants that, right?
But, you know, I was one of the people who called for impeachment of George Bush when he decided to authorize torture and extra-judicial killing. And now, President Obama authorizes torture and extra-judicial killing. He follows, so far as I can tell, virtually the identical policies of former President Bush-- including indefinite detention, rendition, black prisons, and, in a new step, the authorized, extra-judicial killing of American citizens who are deemed "security threats." President Obamahas even gone so far as to say that the Executive Branch can imprison someone forever, EVEN IF THAT PERSON IS FOUND INNOCENT IN A COURT OF LAW.
And while I voiced my opinion, I and I stopped giving money, I otherwise have kept my tongue and said that I would continue to support the President and the Party.
And then, of course, came the sell-out on health care. I don't know if any of the Obama supporters have looked, but man, the Obama plan looks an AWFUL LOT like the plan put forward by John McCain -- the one which was approved by the Heritage Foundation, for Christ's sake. You know, the one which taxes "cadillac plans" and amounts to a windfall to the insurance industry, in the form of millions of new captive customers who must now participate in an oligarchic insurance industry which will effectively set rates. Single Payer -- pshaw!
And again, while I voiced my opinion about this plan, I otherwise have continued to support the President.
Card check? Ha! Don't get me started.
And again, while I have criticized the President, I've continued to give him and other Democrats my support.
Don't Ask, Don't Tell? Ha! SStill alive and kicking, despite the fact that the Preisdient could end this with the stroke of a pen. All he has to say is "In a time of war, we cannot afford to be discharging soldiers who serve admirably, based upon some outmoded social code. Other NATO countries have homosexuals serving actively -- and we can too."
And again, while I have criticized the President, I've continued to give him and other Democrats my support.
Offshore drilling? Sigh.
And again, while I have criticized the President, I've continued to give him and other Democrats my support.
But now....now a Democratic President, and a Democratic Congress, based upon bullshit statistics -- when the truth is that Social Security could be fixed with a few tweaks (such as raising the contribution cap) -- now the Party that I've supported is trying to join with the Republicans to cut Social Security benefits to "fix" a system that isn't broken.
This is, finally, a bridge too far. Go forward with this asinine "plan" and, quite frankly, you've lost my support, and I suspect you've lost the support of many, many other people. I will do all in my power to stop you -- and, if that includes standing idly by while the Republicans win, then, well, let the fucking republicans win.
Yeah, I'm disgruntled. I've fought hard to help you, but what is the point -- you just betray the principles you promised to support. So what if President Obama gets impeached -- what fucking difference will it make? So what if the Republicans win in 2012-- again, what fucking difference will it make?
