Glenn Beck suggests a conspiracy of the highest order that his staff can't find footage of the late Senator Byrd's filibuster of the Civil Rights Act in the early 60s. Truly an entry for my future syndicated column, "Dear Dumbass:"
I guess the unglued Glenn is betting his audience doesn't know: TV coverage of the senate began IN THE 80s during the advent of cable TV. The same cable TV which, through sheer volume, gives the dipshit a pulpit that my crazy, drunk uncle is more deserving of.
Oh Christ, these lies are tired. And frankly, they make me lose faith in us, because I imagine idiots out there are sucking this up. Oh please, don't let them be friends...
I fell in political love with Senator Byrd during the NPR broadcast of senate hearings which discussed the law that allowed us to invade Iraq. It was post-911, and like many I've talked to since, I couldn't stop watching or listening to the news... any news. It bordered on obsessive-compulsive.
I was in my car, on a rainy afternoon, listening to a passionate Senator Byrd denounce the Bush Administration for its strategy of preemptive war, calling the Constitution "quaint" with respect to allowing congress to authorize war (that was the vote, btw - to allow the executive branch the ability to declare war without congress' consent). His clear, unwavering defense against a totalitarian and warmongering executive branch was riveting.
And Glenn, buddy - not for nothin', that footage used to be pretty hard to find too - for realz - and THAT footage actually existed in the first place. Just sayin'.
