No cool toss tonight... between Steinbrenner's death and Afghanistan, both Keith and Rachel keep it kind of somber.
Extra-special interview from Washington, though, which I'll attempt to summarize below the fold.
First, the Department of Justice takes steps to make its name more than a brand name by bringing federal indictments againstcurrent and former New Orleans police officers for shooting unarmed people during Hurricane Katrina. As Rachel pointed out, this is important for the whole country, not only New Orleans.
Rachel talks to Special EnvoyRichard Holbrooke Holbrooke is probably one of the most guarded individuals I have ever seen interviewed. He is probably quite good at diplomacy, though, as he has a calm presence...I would not have been surprised, almost, if he looked at our Ms. Maddow and said "These are not the droids you're looking for." I don't think the mind tricks would really work on Rachel, though. It is confusing that there are so many factions in Afghanistan...there is not even just one Taliban.
"I wouldn't confuse you with Chris Matthews." was probably my favorite quote, although I'm not sure that we really learned anything about the transaction of the conflict so far. I was intrigued by the thought that Holbrooke's percentage of Afghan Taliban supporters is about equivalent to the percentage of Americans who thought Bush was doing well at the end of his term....could most civilizations convince ten percent to believe anything?
I was interrupted during the Iranian spy segment, but kudos to the child of the eighties that wrote the "Iran So Far Away" caption. Almost made up for the lack of a funny Keith & Rachel toss
