Global Issues says
The informal slogan of the Decade of Women became "Women do two-thirds of the world’s work, receive 10 percent of the world’s income and own 1 percent of the means of production."
— Richard H. Robbins, Global Problems and the Culture of Capitalism, (Allyn and Bacon, 1999), p. 354
Why do women make less than men?
Did you know, having children is bad for women but good for men!!
Men with children appear to get an earnings boost, whereas women lose earnings. Men with children earn about 2% more on average than men without children, according to the GAO findings, whereas women with children earn about 2.5% less than women without children.
Seems like men get paid more just for being men...They are smarter?
"The world today is vastly different than it was in 1983, but sadly, one thing that has remained the same is the pay gap between men and women," said U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-New York, 14th). "After accounting for so many external factors, it seems that still, at the root of it all, men get an inherent annual bonus just for being men. If this continues, the only guarantees in life will be death, taxes and the glass ceiling. We can't let that happen."

Let's see if in Europe women are doing any better. No...
What do we have here?
According to Germany's Federal Statistical Office, average hourly wages for women in Germany are 23.2 percent lower than they are for men, and the gap is growing. The European Commission is now demanding that Germany take action.
What's more, the gender pay gap in Germany is much wider than the European Union average of 18 percent.
Out of the other 26 EU member states, the gap was only wider in
Estonia (most recent figures, 2007: 30.3 percent),
The Czech Republic (26.2 percent),
Austria (25.5 percent) and the
Netherlands (most recent figures, 2007: 23.6 percent).
Women in these european countries are better off
The EU countries with the narrowest gender-related income gaps, on the other hand, were
Italy (4.9 percent),
Slovenia (8.5 percent),
Romania and Belgium (with 9 percent each), and Malta and Portugal (with 9.2 percent each).
Moroccon women make an average of 40% less than men with same degree and position
Are women better off in East Asia?
Nope...
Gender pay gap – The overall earned incomes of women compared to men’s show
a pronounced gender pay gap in East Asia: less than or just half of men’s in Japan, Malaysia, the Republic of Korea and Singapore; around 60% of men’s in Hong Kong SAR, the Philippines and Thailand; and about two-thirds of men’s in China and Viet Nam. This is related to the high numbers of women among unpaid family workers and/or in agriculture
in the region. The pay gap is marginally smaller in non-agricultural employment, for example, women’s wages as a percentage of men’s in manufacturing amount to below 60% in Japan
and the Republic of Korea; below 65% in Hong Kong SAR, Malaysia and Singapore; and range between 70 and 80% in Thailand and the Philippines.
Evolution of the gender pay gap – The trends are mixed. Generally, it has been slowly narrowing in recent decades in several countries in the region but it seems to be on the rise in China, including Hong Kong SAR and in Japan
Hey, how about Australia, they must be doing better there? Nope!!!
First some facts. Yes, women, on average, earn much less than men. According to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data on average weekly earnings, the gap between the sexes is considerable: the average female employee in late 2007 earned about $690 a week compared with $1060 for the average man.
Is there hope? Yes, in a women's dream there is
But ending on a positive note:-
Britain has taken steps to Disclose salaries
The Government will follow through with Labour legislation which could require employers to disclose whether they pay women as much as men, it was announced on Friday.
''The Equality Act will make Britain a fairer country for all,'' he said.
