My latest Green Asteroid blog post discusses the correlation between those of us who grew up under the nuclear shadow and the at-least-as terrifying specter of global warming.
Nice of them to give us two apocalyptic scenarios in one lifetime.
Our motivation should be to give kids the peace of mind we never had.
Excerpts, poll and more below the fold.
My introduction to global warming angst:
I didn’t really start thinking or caring about global warming until about 2001. Before that time, it seemed like the scientists were saying we had a 100 years to take care of it. Not a big deal. We’ll get it done.
Then the results from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) came out and it seemed to change the game. Global warming was not only real and man-made but it looked like our window of opportunity to halt its worst effects were shorter than was previously thought. In fact, it appeared that we were going to see dramatic changes in our lifetime.
Despite the media's attempt to pidgeonhole those of us who choose to believe scientists, I'm not some gonzo enviromentalist. I like the planet, and all, but the planet will survive in some form or another. I really worry what's going to happen to us humans:
I consider myself a human-centered environmentalist, realizing that all life is intertwined and that no matter how sophisticated we think we’ve become as a society, without healthy eco-systems we could be gone in the wink of a dinosaur’s eye.
There's a few more paragraphs but if I give it all away you won't click on my blog!
Have a great week.
