from NPR:
Daniel Schorr, a longtime senior news analyst for NPR and a veteran Washington journalist who broke major stories at home and abroad during the Cold War and Watergate, has died. He was 93.
h/t to Skritchard for the pic
I became a fan of Mr. Schorr after hearing him interview Frank Zappa. Although I haven't always agreed with his opinions, I've always felt that he was a straight shooter and certainly one of the better commentators on NPR.
Some highlights of his career include an exclusive interview with Nikita Khrushchev in 1957, coverage of the building of the Berlin Wall and conditions in East Germany in the 60's and the Great Society program during the LBJ years. He made Dick Nixon's enemies list .. and considered it a great honor. Jesse Helms nicknamed him "Killer Schoor"!
kayakbiker found this on wikipedia:
Schorr made an appearance with Zappa on February 10, 1988, where he sang "It Ain't Necessarily So" and "Summertime". Schorr delivered the eulogy on NPR after Zappa's death on December 4, 1993; he professed not to understand Zappa's lengthy discourses on music theory, but he found a kindred spirit—a serious man with a commitment to free speech.
Reading his bio gives you a sense of how lengendary a journalist he was. He's bucked the government, the corporate media, and pretty much anyone he needed to in order to get the story told. I'll certainly miss his stuff ..
