In reading articles about the Hartford beer distributor shooting I could not help but become overwhelmed by some of the comments about racism charges being overblown, made up, reverse discrimination and the like.

Shooter says he handled the problem

The MONEY QUOTES from this article are:

Michael Cirigliano also spent three decades working at the warehouse before he retired two years ago.

He said the company had increased its hiring of minorities in recent years.

"They've been bringing in more and more minority people to fill the positions," Cirigliano said. "You could almost go as far as that's reverse discrimination. They were hiring the groups to balance the workplace, because that's what we are in America, there's a balance."

The article states that the warehouse had 69 dock workers 14 minorities (4-black,9-Hispanic, 1-asian) (20%).  Interestingly, according to the 2000 census the population of Hartford, Connecticut, was 42%-Hispanic/Latino, 37%-black, 17%-white, 2%-asian, 2% other.

These are definitely the kinds of stats the lend credence to "special treatment" for minorities (NOT!!)

Many of the commenters would prefer society be more like it was when Shirley Sherrod's father was shot to death in front of witnesses but the perpetrator was never even charged.

When a white man goes on a rampage and kills up a bunch of people because the black President is going to take his guns and make whites' slaves (i.e. Pittsburgh last year) the overwhelming commentary is "he must have snapped," "he's off his meds," etc.  (By the way did you leave a comment for that one).  Why is it any different in this case?

This idea that blacks are given special treatment makes me laugh.  How much "special treatment" are we getting when unemployment in our community is over 20%?

I think it is horrible when anyone loses their life to violence but it should not be used to push this "we've done enough for the coloreds agenda."  Those who do this see the crumbs that are often handed to blacks and disregard the cake that is being eaten by those who would keep all of us (black, white and other) enslaved. We are on the same team.

It is time we stopped allowing them to divide us along racial lines.  Throughout society the have nots have overthrown the haves but America has perfected a system where the have nots are blaming other have nots for their problems.  What we should do is start insisting on our Government providing things that benefit the 98% of us (less than $250,000/yr) and not the 2% (over 250,000/yr)

WAKEUP PEOPLE the only color for capitalists is GREEN.

That means stop the trade agreements that allow our jobs to go elsewhere so some rich person's stock price can increase.  Demand that CEO pay be put more in line with the employees.  If companies want to pay more than 20 times the average workers salary, fine but there should not be a tax deduction for the excessive amount.  If executives want a retirement plan (SERP) on top of the plan they also share with the employees, fine but they should not be allowed tax deductions for these amounts either.  Bonuses paid to executive when they've laid off workers should not be tax deductible AND should be taxed at higher rates.  Executives that create jobs should be allowed tax incentives on the bonuses that they receive.

Often I see comments without solutions these are just a few but we can get our fiscal house in order by eliminating the breaks for the big corporations and wealthy and focusing on "We the People."

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

usually meets these types of outraged charges of reverse discrimination.  Too bad most white folks have no idea just how ingrained their privilege really is.

I guess it will have to be left to another black or Hispanic president to try to better educate the American population on such race disparity matters. I don't entirely blame Obama for avoiding the subject, given how virulently he's being attacked by racist Republicans.  But I think it only makes thing worse when he does (as in the Shirley Sherrod and Skip Gates examples, among others).

We need a national dialogue on why affirmative action (such as occurred, supposedly, is only a drop in the bucket in terms of redress -- as well as your righteous question of why we let the capitalists divide and conquer the working and middle class by using race identity politics class solidarity.

Then we can know more about this white privilege.

      Bet you can't do it.

If you are sentient, you have to recognize that people are discriminated against and abused and sometimes even killed because of the color of their skin but it is hardly all their is.

"Am I white?" a Jewish lady with an African-American husband in a shelter for abused women asked me.

Gawdalmighty, how to answer such a question?

The lady was angry that the social workers told her black men were like that.

      How nice.

Is some longterm unemployed union man on the streets more privileged than our president if he is pigmentally challenged?

Does white trash ring a bell with you?

An old Negro spiritual has the words:

Better to be a n*** than a poor white man

Is it at all possible to talk about class distinctions and prejudice without these damnable ethnic barriers that elevate some to a privileged status despite enormous handicaps?

if posed to a person of color, the answer would probably be yes... if she were sephardic or ladino that could vary

The problem is, when all of the non-whites have been excluded, that mindset has to seek someone else to exclude... so it begins to narrow the definition of 'white'... excluding jews... then mediterraneans... then irish and scottish... then eastern europeans, etc. Many who are descended from European Jews have grown up being told by this society that only under certain conditions and in certain circumstances would they be deemed "white"... but that whiteness could be pulled back whenever "real white people" felt the need.

then again, I have skin the color of Hershey's Special Dark... and beyond that, I happen to believe the good book where it says that of one blood are all men made.

On that point I believe we are agreed; there is one and only one race... human.

            •  We don't agree on race (0+ / 0-)

There are many races but they are not defined by skin pigmentation nor geography nor any of the usual means of racism for defining us or them.

We deny the science that can conquer disease and division at a terrible cost.

Cystic fibrosis is sometimes called "the Caucasian disease" because it afflicts only Caucasians.

The children of South Asians are underdiagnosed with this terrible disease because doctors are inculcated with the mythology that race is determined by skin pigmentation.  The populations of South Asia are predominately Caucasian.

For sure they are mixed races as are we all.

Take care, friend.  We are mostly on the same page.

Teh google is your friend... perhaps you should get acquainted with it. By using it I found that the cystic fibrosis foundation disagrees with you.

While persons of european ancestry have the highest incidence of CF, in the US roughly 1 case for every 2500 persons, blacks and hispanics have 1 case for every 15100 persons and 1 for every 12500 persons respectively. Even among those of asian ancestry, which until fairly recently was thought to be the least affected group, are now being found to have been underdiagnosed and are believed to have incidence rates closer to those of hispanics and blacks.

CF is not a "white people's disease" any more than Sickle Cell is a "black people's disease".

The population of the Indian subcontinent and other parts of south and southwest asia are not caucasian... the co-opting of 'aryan' by those of european descent notwithstanding.

I've decided that what is happening now with all this hate talk can be simply explained by one little graph.

Who's behind the tea party, who's behind McCain's numerous flip-flop positions, who's behind Rush, who's behind the neo-con's, who's behind Glenn Beck, who's behind all this racism and threats of violence? The rich, who say:

No fucking way I'll let Obama let that line dip!!

  •  Tax the rich! (0+ / 0-)

This has nothing to do with race, and everything to do with class.

When the top 2% was taxed at higher levels, they sought tax shelters by investing in business, not skimming off profits and off-shoring them to hide them from the IRS.  IIRC, the top tax rate under Eisenhower was around 90%.

We also need strong tariffs to encourage U.S. manufactured goods and to make imports more expensive so that our industries can compete -- and this last idea was first implemented by George Washington (wish I had a link handy).

Those two fixes, along with an infrastructure improvement jobs policy, would help jump-start the economy here.

Extra money spent to train minorities for these jobs?  A great idea.

I'd also bring back schools that teach trades which cannot by their nature be outsourced.  A plumber in China, for example, can't help you when your pipes freeze and break in a bad winter, unless you live in China.  Nor can an electrician in Vietnam rewire your house (or do the wiring for any additions you may add), unless you live in Vietnam.  These are the sorts of jobs that require local expertise.

There is no such thing as reverse racism, only racism.

America has perfected a system where the have nots are blaming other have nots for their problems.

Surely that is as old as mankind.  Divide and conquer is not new.

The second of the Great Fallacies, Hemingway wrote to F. Scott Fitzgerald in their correspondence, is believing that the wealthy consider us their equals.

If we could only rid ourselves of these damnable social barriers between people that have nothing whatever to do with biology, the enemy would be obvious.

Race is about biology.  Black and white races are an invention of racists.
