Three women on the United States Supreme Court...ho hum, yawn, yeah, big deal...
Um ya, it's a BFD. Almost two-thirds of my lifetime* there were only men on the Supreme Court. I was 39 years old when the first woman was sworn in. Think about that. "We've come a long way, baby" used to be an ad for a cigarette, now it's a fact. Okay, I know there are a lot of "ya buts" out there, she's too_______, or she's not enough______, she's an unknown quantity, we can only guess how she will rule. Just for tonite forget the ya buts and carpe deim. (and the ode says that the future is unknowable, and that instead one should scale back one's hopes to a brief future, and drink one's wine.) Mine is Chardonnay, but choose whichever your heart desires.
*My driver's license says I exaggerated just a tad. I'm 68, you do the math!
You do NOT get on the Supreme Court by being cute. You only get nominated if you have achieved supreme credentials. We've all heard the story about Sandra Day O'Connor...when she got out of law school, the only job she was offered by a law firm was as a secretary...think about that. Now there are three women presiding. We've come a long way, baby.
I have always wanted to link to Aljazeera...they were one of the first to post that Kagan was sworn in.
http://english.aljazeera.net/...
Elena Kagan has been sworn in as the 112th justice of the US supreme court, becoming the fourth female judge in the court's 221-year history.
John G Roberts Jr, the US chief justice, administered the oath at the supreme court on Saturday just two days after the Senate voted to confirm her nomination by a 63-37 margin.
Kagan pledged to "faithfully and impartially" administer justice to people from all walks to life.
As a justice in the supreme court, she will act as final arbiters of the US Constitution, set precedent for lower courts, and decide the nation's toughest moral and legal dilemmas.
I removed the video, it was interfering with comments:(
Here's a link though

I was prepared for some of the usual right-wing bluster and ignorance in reading the comments on YouTube below the swearing-in video you linked to, but about 95% of them are filled with overflowing hatred and vitriol. I couldn't help myself -- I posted this (as comment #34):
Wow. What country am I in? I am astounded by the hatred, ignorance, bigotry and blatant anti-Semitism I'm reading in the comments here. Is this what you all learn by watching Fox? Is this what you are teaching your children? We should be celebrating today having the fourth woman ever sworn in to our Supreme Court. You may not like her for whatever personal bias you might have, but is there anything wrong with some simple respect? Do you all really want to live in a country that is ruled by hate?
If these comments are representative in the slightest of what has become of our country, we are truly in very serious trouble.
