Tonight I stumbled across a politico article telling me that:
Florida Democratic Senate candidate Jeff Greene challenged Rep. Kendrick Meek (D-Fla.) Sunday to join him in calling on embattled Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) to resign.
The first thing I thought is "well what does a Congressman from New York have to do with a Senate race in Florida?" The article went on to say that the Meek had received some funds from Rangel, and I'm sure that this is ostensibly why this is an "issue" in the campaign.
(Continued below the fold...)
However, in light of the current climate of ethics accusations against black legislators (a separate politico article pointed out that "At one point earlier this year, all eight lawmakers under formal investigation by the House ethics committee...were black Democrats.") I cannot help but wonder if Greene would have made this an issue against a white opponent. My gut tells me he would not.
I don't believe that Greene has any sort of personal racist attitudes towards African Americans, but I do think that he needs to be called out for his political opportunism in trying to perpetuate harmful attitudes about ethics among blacks.
