The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Senator Durbin has had a stomach tumor removed today.
Over the jump, please.
The tumor is malignant, "a rare form of stomach cancer." It is called a 'gastro-intestinal stromal tumor' (called a GIST.) However, since the tumor is small, it was able to be completely removed with a 'laproscopic partial gatric resection', and no cancer was discovered in the lining of the stomach.
No further treatment is expected, and he plans a full schedule, next week.
The tumor was found during a routine check up.
Senator Durbin is my Senator, and I wish him a speedy recovery and all best wishes.
Updated to add the Wikipedia entry about GIST. I didn't need the pictures in it during lunch hour, but the article is interesting.
Updated again to the Senator's DKos diary list. (Took me forever to find it... Of COURSE he only used his name, and not his title.)
(Probably final) Update to say: I have emailed the link for this diary (and mostly, it's kind comments) to Senator Durbin. I hope he finds the wishes very healing.
REALLY FINAL UPDATE THANKS TO WILLISTON BARRETT'S COMMENT:
The original article (linked above) has been changed to indicate that the tumor is NOT cancerous:
His office initially said the tumor was a rare form of stomach cancer. But later a spokesman said no sign of cancer had been found and that Durbin "is expected to undergo no further treatment."
