I just want to make that clear. Cheering Obama on this site will not change anything.
So, just for a minute, put away your pompoms and stop building your "Yes We Can!" human pyramid and look at what is actually happening around you.
Obama didn't lose 20% favorability with hispanics because of us, and he won't gain them back because of you. He didn't lose similar numbers in the liberal base because of us, and he won't gain them back because of you.
Voters are unhappy. They are unhappy at 10% unemployment and a government that is more interested in kabuki than actually doing anything about it. They are unhappy because those who are not in power are actually calling most of the shots in Washington, and whats worse, those that are in power are letting them do it and then whimpering about how unfair it is.
Americans don't respect a patsy, and that's what the Democrats have been. Their victories have been pyrrhic. Their accomplishments have all fallen short of adequacy to the problems they propose to solve. They have shown time and again an unwillingness to brave real political risk for serious policy gain.
American elected Barack Obama because he promised to be a "fierce advocate", to use his term about the subject of LGBT rights, and he has not been. He has been an advocate, sure, and for some that is enough. But Americans wanted, and frankly need, a fighter. They need someone who is willing to put it all on the line and go for broke. Barack Obama has proven he is not willing to do that.
I don't post here disparaging the Democrats or the administration because I hate them. I don't post here just to thumb my nose at them and stick out my tongue.
I post here, or anywhere, to try to get the message to someone, anyone who can hear me that things need to change. They need to change if you want the Democrats to win politically, and they need to change if you don't want America to fall farther from glory.
Take off your rose-colored glasses. It's time for some hard-headed realism. The only reason Democrats have a chance in the midterms is because their adversaries are complete loons, but that speaks against the Republicans, not for the Democrats. The American people can see this, and they're not happy about it. And no amount of denial from us will change that.
The Democrats are on the road to eventual failure, and unless they are given incentive to change course they will get there. We are trying to provide that incentive. By mindlessly cheerleading them, you are only giving them incentive to not change a thing.
If you like supporting a party too scared to just end DADT without covering their asses with surveys and year-long studies, then so be it. If you are happy supporting a party that is too scared to close Gitmo, great. If you are content getting behind politicians that are completely beholden to corporate interests, keep at it.
But if you are not, then you need to give them a reason to change. And you can only do that by making it clear that you won't accept those failings from them anymore.
