Reading the Kos the last few days have left me wondering, does the left really care about the 1st amendment, or do they see it only as a way to protect speech that they see as defending a just cause?

I’m sure many here will say on one hand that they would die to protect speech that they disagree with and then on the other say that a nutjob pastor of 50 shouldn’t burn a Koran because it will piss crazy people off in another country.  These are the same people that rail against conservatives (rightly so) that protest against the building of a Muslim Community center near the WTC.

I’m calling bullshit!  The crazy conservatives calling for the suppression of religious freedom are for the most part not even in power, but the government, which as of now is being run by the Democratic party, is using its full force of legal coercion to stop this Koran burning.

FBI agents visit Florida church over Quran burn

FBI agents visited Thursday with a minister of a small Florida church that plans to burn the Quran on Sept. 11, as public safety became a paramount concern and President Barack Obama added his voice to the chorus of opposition.

What?  The FBI?  What if the FBI "visited" a war protester during the Bush admin?  Wouldn’t liberals be rightfully pissed?
Obama has spoken out against this; Clinton has spoken out against this; Cantor, etc.

Why is this Obama, Clinton, Cantor, or anyone else in the governments business?  Obama should just say that he might not agree with it, but in this country we have the absolute right to demonstrate in this way.

While the media is entirely complicit in this stupid story, that is to be expected, but for liberals to go along with it is a betrayal of everything they are supposed to stand for.  Aren’t you the same ones that said we shouldn’t give up our rights in lui of security?  Well heck, what kind of message does this send?

And for those that say the local government should stop it via the fire department, etc, please don’t call yourselves liberals.  Even worse, I have read several compare this to screaming fire in a theater.  Scary.

I’m going back to ignoring this guy...

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
