I think there are at least three lessons from this one.
- Don't alienate your base.
- Don't be rude, at least not as a policy.
- Work harder at your job than running/triathaloning/swimming
Four years ago Adrian Fenty won every precinct in DC. It's close this time but it looks like Gray has defeated Fenty. Beyond Fenty's penchant for rudeness the real policy difference was that Fenty wanted to preside over a world class city -- like Manhatten -- while the rest of us just wanted to get by in a tough economy and hoped our modest dwellings were not bulldozed for high rises and yuppie ghettos.
I could live in Manhatten but I chose to live in DC. I hope Mayor Gray focuses on improving what is here rather than making us into something that we don't want to be.
