My mother, talented knitter that she is, has hand knitted an afghan for this year's Netroots Nation auction. I can tell you from first hand experience, this is a wonderful afghan and perfect for keeping warm in the winter or just having on the back of your couch for when you need it. And I'll tell you how I know...
Before i get into the story of the afghan, why don't you go check out some of the more awesome things in the auction, like:
- A Netroots Beam Decanter, inexplicably from 1984. Someone will have to explain this one to me, but it looks awesome. I think it holds bourbon, which is the decanting part of it. How they got the Netroots on an Apple IIc look-alike is a little lost on me.
- A stock of Kennedy buttons donated by McJoan's mom, McMom. What a treat!
- This really awesome doodle from a really awesome Congressman, Raul Grijalva. How cool is that?
- BREAKING This just in!!, an autographed copy of Keith Olbermann's upcoming book, Torches and Pitchforks: The Worst of the Worst, from Beck, Bill and Bush to Palin and other Posturing Republicans.
And of course, the afghan. You see, I've been sleeping, sitting, laying under this afghan, in one form or another, my entire life. My mom loves knitting and she has made several throughout my life.
The first one I remember was a bright blue, looking back on it, it was the kind of color that one might choose in the 70s but maybe not so much anymore. That afghan was probably knitted before I was born, and I remember it always being there, on the back of the couch in the family room. In the cold Michigan winters, it was there to keep me warm.
Fast forward to college and my mother knitted me an afghan in my school's colors my freshman year. The selflessness reflected in that afghan is even more evident when you consider that she knitted a green afghan for her son at Michigan State, despite the fact she is a die-hard University of Michigan fan. I've still got that green afghan and it still does the trick.
You too can start to create you own memories with your own afghan today! Or check out any of many other great items at the NN Auction.
