Dear Friends,
My opponent Allen West, like many Sarah Palin-endorsed right-wing candidates, claims to want to strictly follow the Constitution. Yet, at the same time, West is feeding into the very movements that would weaken and undermine it.
Built into our Constitution and Bill of Rights are protections for those who would otherwise be discriminated against for their political views, religious beliefs, or otherwise denied equality under the law. A strong defense of this nation doesn’t require compromising our values of freedom.
Through time, we’ve begun to undo the damage of centuries of intolerance and injustice.
So it is appalling that - as we struggle to balance freedom of speech with freedom of religion - that my opponent Allen West would criticize coexistence and tolerance itself.
West has brought intolerance to an outrageous and offensive level. He wants people to believe a bumper sticker that says “Coexist” is a threat to America’s future. People with these bumper stickers, West said, “would give away who we are, our rights and freedoms and liberties because they are afraid to stand up and confront that which is the antithesis, anathema of who we are.”
See this:
One of America’s greatest strength is its ability to distinguish real threats from those manufactured by opportunists and fear-mongers. We have the ability to protect ourselves without losing ourselves to prejudice and stereotyping.
Sincerely,
Congressman Ron Klein
