Tonight the Democrat's candidate for Congress in the 11th district of New Jersey, Doug Herbert, came for a meet and greet at the meeting of the local Democratic club. I have to say, I was very impressed, and you will be too.
Doug talked about his opponent, entrenched incumbent Republican Rodney Frelinghuysen. Rodney is synonymous with being a fake deficit hawk. He claims he wants to reduce the budget deficit, but does everything he can to reduce taxes and keep spending on useless wars up and up. He says he supports small businesses here, and fixing the economy, yet Frelinghuysen voted no on the jobs bill, and he voted no on the stimulus.
Doug Herbert SUPPORTS ACTUALLY FIXING THE ECONOMY by supporting the jobs and infrastructure bill. He highlighted three main areas of focus: jobs, the economy, and education. He believes that the deficit is an issue we will have to face, but that we must first ensure that our economy is running. Doug also is a supporter of the public option, and would support gradually coming back to health reform issue to try and foment further change of the system. While he does support the bill that was passed, he notes that insurance companies have been able to take advantage of loopholes, and that the people, who need the health care, and need it to be more affordable, have still been getting hit hard.
Here's the thing: the 11th district, which includes Morris County, NJ and some surrounding areas, is ancestrally Republican. HOWEVER, this year we have been presented with a great opportunity: 47% of the electorate in the 11th is dissatisfied with Rodney Frelinghuysen, and that number could grow with some help. Doug has ads to run in the district, but needs more support. So, I encourage everyone to donate to him, via his ActBlue page. Having met him, he was very friendly, very principled, and I know he would make a fantastic Congressman.
