On June 9, 1954 during the height of McCarthyism, while Wisconsin Senator Joe McCarthy was assassinating the Character of young lawyer working for the army, his boss Joseph Welch spoke the immortal words that brought an end to the dark days of the communist witch hunts by the radical right:
"Until this moment, Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness."... "Let us not assassinate this lad further, senator. You have done enough. Have you no sense of decency?"
Have Krugman, NPR, Stewart, Colbert given us our "no sense of decency" moment?
Before that moment in 1954, the Main Stream Media was afraid to expose the lies and injustices of McCarthy and the far right. Many Republican senators also were frozen with fear and refused to oppose the radicals who had taken over their party. Does this sound familiar?
It wasn't until that moment in 1954 that the media and the American public woke up to the dangers of the extremism McCarthy and the Republican party were practicing. Most of the press became responsible again, and the American public started to become better informed and began to reject the extremism that the Republicans practiced in the early 1950's.
Has our moment FINALLY come? Have Krugman, NPR, Stewart, and Colbert finally given America the opportunity to look into the mirror and see what we are becoming under the shrill, irrational, hate speech practiced by the radical Republicans of today?
Krugman seems to be on a mission to try and save his country before it's too late. In yesterdays column;
...Mr. McConnell, who was self-righteously denouncing the budget deficit just the other day, now wants to blow that deficit up with big tax cuts for the rich. But he doesn’t have the votes. So he’s trying to get what he wants by pointing a gun at the heads of middle-class families, threatening to force a jump in their taxes unless he gets paid off with hugely expensive tax breaks for the wealthy....
What kind of political party would engage in that kind of brinksmanship? The answer is the same kind of party that shut down the federal government in 1995 in an attempt to force President Bill Clinton to accept steep cuts in Medicare, and is actively discussing doing the same to Mr. Obama. So, as I said, the deeper explanation of the tax-cut fight is that it’s ultimately about a radicalized Republican Party, which accepts no limits on partisanship....
But what’s even more important is the principle of the thing. Threats to punish innocent bystanders unless your political rivals give you what you want have no legitimate place in democratic politics. Giving in to such threats would be an economic and political mistake, but more important, it would be morally wrong — and it would encourage more such threats in the future.
It’s time for Democrats to take a stand, and say no to G.O.P. blackmail....
Krugman
And NPR this morning, although not exactly a Main Stream Media source, steps up to further expose the manipulation of the tea party by wealthy conservatives with corporate interests.
...There was New Yorker writer Jane Mayer's recent opus about the quiet money links between billionaire Koch brothers and the Tea Party movement. That controversial piece has gotten a lot of attention and some push back from one of its main subjects, David Koch....
LEVINTHAL: Arguably, there are some groups out there who have co-opted this energy. One would be the Tea Party Express. It's an organization that has largely been criticized by even some of the more grassroots organizations as being run by political operatives, run by Republicans....
LEVINTHAL: We actually did a study to see where they're getting their money from. They're receiving the bulk of their money, or at least the most amount of their money from retirees, from health professionals, and also people who are involved in the financial industries. The oil and gas industries....
Tea Party's roots
Even a few weeks ago, no one would dare imply that the Tea Party had become an extension of big Oil/Pharmaceuticals/Finance, and the Republican party.
The truth may not yet be pouring out, but it's at least beginning to ooze.
Then comes Stewart/Colbert. There has been no one who has exposed the lies, deceptions, and pure ridiculous nonsense of FOX News, more than Stewart and Colbert. Why does it take 2 comedians on basic cable to expose the severe threat to our nations democracy that FOX news represents?
No democracy can survive when it's citizens are deliberately misinformed by corporate interests to believe white is black and up is down. During every revolution, the first targets to capture are the media. With misinformation, lies, and deception, you control the actions of the masses to move against their own best interests and support the Oligarchy interests that control them.
And now Stewart/Colbert are sponsoring a rally in the capital to truly take back our nation from the shrill voices of hate, racism, and irrationality that have been given a huge bullhorn by the Oligarchs who are pulling the puppet strings of a confused and misinformed Tea Party movement.
Coming 3 days before the election, a HUGE crowd warning that the powers of extremism are trying to take our country back to it's darkest days, could be enough to give the voices of reason a second chance at solving our country's most serious problems. Anyone who can attend this rally should go! Save the screaming and inflammatory signs for another time, but show America we are on the brink of handing our country over to some of the most extreme people the nation has ever seen. Let people know they MUST get out and vote for Reason, and reject the Extremism that threatens our democracy.
It seems a door of opportunity has been opened for us. So often in the past we have slammed those doors shut without realizing the price of not walking through. Lets keep this door open! By promoting and jumping on board the Stewart/Colbert rally, let's make the media and pundits understand that we've had enough of the extremism of the Republican Tea Partiers and we want a government that can address our problems with a rational and reasonable voice!
