Kansas has early voting! In-person early voting begins on October 19, and you can request a mail-in ballot now (ballots will be mailed beginning October 13).
October 18 is the deadline to register to vote in the 2010 elections.
More details below . . .
Advance voters have two options - requesting a ballot by mail, and voting early in person at the county elector's office.
You can request a ballot by mail now - go to the Secretary of State's Advance Voting site and fill out a (PDF) request for a ballot by mail. October 29 is the deadline to request a ballot by mail, but I wouldn't wait that long. If you mail your ballot, it must be received by the close of polls on election day, Nov. 2.
You may also advance vote in person at your county election office. In most counties, in-person advance voting begins on October 19. Check for the location of your county election office. The deadline for in-person advance voting is noon on Nov. 1.
Also, please don't forget that the deadline to register to vote is October 18.
The truly frightening Republican Jerry Moran is up for Sam Brownback's former Senate seat. Congressman Moran (from the Western 1st District) was endorsed by South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint. Democrat Lisa Johnston will struggle to stay competitive for this seat, so let's try to get out ahead of the crazy train and deny this seat to Senator "DeMented"'s chosen candidate.
Jerry Moran has a 0% rating from NARAL. He has voted "no" on things like stem cell research, paid parental leave for federal employees, assistance for workers whose jobs are moved overseas, prescription drug benefits for seniors, and banning workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation. He's "for" banning gay adoption, banning same-sex marriage, school prayer, and a US-Mexico border wall. Moran is also a C-Streeter.
One race that may actually be competitive is the 3rd District (KC-area) Congressional race, with the wife of former Rep. Dennis Moore (retired), Stephene Moore, running on the Democratic side against Republican Kevin Yoder. Let's hold this Democratic seat!
After a bruising Republican primary for the House seat in the 4th District (Wichita-area), Mike Pompeo is the nominee. Businessman Pompeo was accused of shipping jobs to Mexico, and in a sign of the times, prevailed over moderate state senator Jean Schodorf (who, horrors!, supports abortion rights). Pompeo is backed by Koch brothers money. We have high hopes that Democrat Raj Goyle will take Todd Tiarht's former seat.
Sam Brownback is trying to take the governor's office, which is a scary prospect. Get out for Democrat Tom Holland.
Let's try to keep Kris Kobach out of the Secretary of State's office - vote for Chris Biggs! Among such "accomplishments" as getting funding yanked from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (where he taught as a law professor) for calling the state legislature stupid, Kobach was instrumental in writing Arizona's draconian immigration law SB1070. He also wants to abolish birthright citizenship because of those pesky anchor babies. He's a former constitutional law professor who doesn't seem to understand constitutional law.
Another hot race is for Kansas Attorney General - let's hold onto Democrat Steve Six.
Get out and vote!
