In the GOP's "new" Pledge to America, an interesting bullet point shows up at the end of the "Checks and Balances" Section:
• We will fight efforts to use a national crisis for political gain.
Hmm, I kind of like that. I can get behind that. I wonder what effect it would have?
So, the GOP wants to "fight efforts to use a national crisis for political gain." What effect would this have:
- No more using a terrorist attack to justify attacking a Country having nothing to do with the terrorist attack;
- No more suspension of Constitutional rights for American citizens simply accused of terrorism;
- No more claiming terrorist trials cannot be held in the United States;
- No more exploiting Ground Zero to prevent a community center from being built nearby;
- No more inciting mosque vandalism or burning;
- No more opposition to the building of new mosques (or community centers with prayer rooms in them) anywhere in the Country;
- No more burning of, or threats to burn, the Koran;
- No more prejudice against Muslims, period; and
- No more "noun, verb, 9/11"
I am sure there are more. Those are just off the top of my head.
So, yes, not exploiting a national crises for political gain is a good idea. Maybe the GOP should try it sometime.
