What do voting and war have to do with one another, well let me explain.
War has been "good" to my family. No, not the Krupps or the Fords, but a long familial line of Chieftains, fighters, scrappers, mercenaries and general bad asses. My family's founding ancestor died more than a thousand miles from home believing he could conquer the Holy Roman Empire. We had a lot invested in our country of origin, we fought and died, hunted like animals. We have a lot invested in this country. We came about 1745, just in time for the first two American generations to fight in the Revolutionary War. For more than 200 years every generation shed blood for this country, we missed no conflict. During the Civil War the sides of my family fought against each other at Gettysburg. I have my Grandfather's diaries from WWI and my Father's medals. A Father joined the Canadian Air Force very early and went on to fly in the RAF. He was already a hero by the time we entered the war and he returned here, not as a flyer but as a recruiter.
So what do voting and war have to do with one another? My family came to this country to be free, to have a choice in how they lived their lives. They value freedom more than just about anything I can think of. Without freedom there is no choice at all. They also understand the freedom they value requires not only sacrifice but nurturing, tending so it is strong and inclusive. Voting is tending the freedoms we value. You can't protect your choices in the future if you don't choose to vote now. So in addition to never missing a conflict or a good fight in 234 years we don't miss elections either.
