Though there has been talk of this project for over 20 years, there's been a major push by various political and economic interests to create a road in northern Tanzania that would connect Tanzania’s coast to Lake Victoria and Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo that would cut straight through the migration route of some 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra. If this project goes through, the potential for ecosystem collapse is very real. There is a petition going out to the Tanzanian government and other invested parties to change the location of the proposed route, and an opinion piece penned by 27 wildlife ecologists detailing the nature of the problem and potential solutions has been published in this month's issue of the journal Nature.
I'm not sure realistically speaking what can be done on our end, but the need for public awareness on this issue is tremendous. Tell everyone you can, and let's try to put out pressure to stop this potential travesty.
