Marco Rubio: Is He a So-called Anchor Baby?
I did not know all that much about Marco Rubio. I knew that he was an ally of Jeb Bush and that he was from South Florida and that he held a leadership position in the Florida Senate. Now that he running for the U.S Senate I am seeing his advertisements. One of his commercials has a picture of his family home back in Cuba. I immediately got the impression that his family had lost the fight against Castro and had moved to the U.S.A after Castro took over. His father who sounds likes a good man passed away recently. After looking at the Marco Rubio website I see that his father had actually moved to Florida earlier in the 1950s.
Now maybe Marco’s parents had planned to move back to Cuba at some point but I suspect that would be after they retired, if ever. His parents apparently moved to Florida for jobs that probably were not available in Cuba. Maybe they sent money back to whoever was actually still residing in the house in Cuba? Perhaps, he still has relatives living there in Cuba? I do not know. Still if America is the "best country in world’ as Rubio claims in his ads why would they want to move back? I do not know. It seems clear that his parents were not exiles in the sense of being forced to leave Cuba against their will; they had already left.
This leads to the question of whether Marco Rubio is a so-called anchor baby. It probably depends on how one defines the term. Many Republicans want to consider amending or is repealing the 14th amendment to make sure anchor babies do not get citizenship. I wonder whether some Republicans silently resent him. Marco was born in 1971 and he has 2 older siblings and I suspect that one them was born in the U.S.A. if that matters for categorization purposes. Maybe only the first United States born child qualifies as the anchor baby. Currently, anyone born in the USA is a citizen. I know many Republicans would like to change that. I suspect that Rick Scott is one of those Republicans. Scott had so many commercials discussing Arizona in the primary that some commentators joked that he was running for Governor of Arizona. I wonder whether this makes Rubio uncomfortable. Apparently, it does not since they are appearing at some of the same events. Maybe Rubio has had his dreams fulfilled and does not really care what happens to other Hispanics.
It is really very interesting to see how the Republican establishment in Florida decided to support Rubio rather than Governor Crist. Sure Jeb Bush has always been hotter for Hispanics than Madonna, but for rest of the Republicans it is curious. The only thing Crist did prior to the support switch to Rubio was to be courteous to President Obama . How dare he! I bet Crist wishes that he had selected himself for the open Senate seat that was vacated by Senator Martinez. He never counted on being betrayed by the Florida Republican Party establishment. It will be interesting to see whether all 3 of the major Senate candidates remain in the race to the end.
