Last week there was a lot made of the fact that Jerry Kilgore did not appear with George W. Bush during a speech in Norfolk. Apparently, Mr. Kilgore has changed his mind.
A few weeks ago I sent a pissy email to Jerry Kilgore's campaign about their Swiftboadesque death penalty ad and wound up on their mailing list. I just checked my mail and found an Email from them announcing that Jerry Kilgore would be holding a "Victory Rally with President Bush" on Monday in Richmond. I wonder if the Kilgore people got pressured into this, given that Richmond is all of 95 miles from the White House and it would look very bad for George W. Bush to NOT appear with the Republican candidate for Governor in the state that has been Republican Red longer than any other. The question is how much hay can the Tim Kaine campaign make of this one? Bush is so unpopular, even in Virginia that this can't possibly help the GOP. Very strange move in my opinion. The pessimist in me can't help but wonder if they don't have some promising internal polls for Tuesday and they are hoping to glom off a Kilgore win by attributing it to the Commander in Chief's sudden appearance by Jerry's side. Let's hope not.
