The "this day in history" cupboard is pretty damn bare for today, and the one item I'm noting won't exactly want to make you go dancing or feel all warm & fuzzy. But, I'll end with something way more betterer! :D
Let's dispense with the ugly first; on this date in 1991, in the closest SCOTUS confirmation vote in the history of the Senate up to this point, the Senate narrowly confirmed the nomination of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court, 52-48. If you think you very intensely dislike "Justice" Thomas NOW - I reserve the word "hate" for just a couple people - read Jeffrey Toobin's The Nine; you'll really REALLY very intensely dislike him then!
Now, if your faith - in - the - compassion - for - humanity tank is a little low these days, I hope this video will boost it up a little. We touched on this subject a little bit last night, but it bears seeing and/or repeating. This gentleman is the most courageous person I've seen in awhile.
With compassion, civility, knowledge, and fun, let's Countdown...
I have a suggested food theme for tonight based on someplace I spent a few hours at earlier this evening; here's a clue!
#5 "The Money Trail" AKA "The GOP Dare" AKA "Inside the Chamber" AKA "Dems Press the Attack" - The midterms are in 18 days, and Keith looks very purple! :D The GOBP is apparently just pleased as punch that so much attention is being paid to the Anti – US Chamber of Commerce. President Obama had more to say about the influence of "outside money" today. President Obama sported a purple tie today, too! Did I miss a memo or something? ;D Jack Conway made a great distinction between the "regular" city & "mom & pop" chambers of commerce and the Anti – US Chamber of Commerce. Pirate Rupert had to answer a lot of questions today, apparently, about his little cool million donation to the Republican Governors’ Association and the Anti – US Chamber of Commerce; another $250K was donated recently, too!
Me thinks TurdBlossom doth protest too much. Matt Yglesias works at Think Progress, the peeps who’ve broken this story. A branch of the US Chamber of Commerce is in India, and they are big – time into the outsourcing business. OK, does anyone else besides me think the combination of "US" Chamber of Commerce & "India" is a bit odd?! A whole bunch of campaign coin that’s been donated & must be publicly disclosed are "...long – time Democratic adversaries and former Bush loyalists." What a damn shock – NOT. Tim Kaine gets some Anti – US Chamber of Commerce time, too. Ya’ know, he just doesn’t have the "punch" as the DNC Chairman as Howard Dean did {sigh}. Uh, Governor Kaine, since when has TurdBlossom worried about what was the "right" thing to do? That statement implies that he knew that at one time in his life; I’m not so sure about that.
#4 "Change" - Pirate Rupert today was more honest & direct about his political leanings than he’s ever been before when speaking to NewsCorp shareholders:
It’s certainly in the best interests and in the interests of the country and of all the shareholders that there be a fair amount of change in Washington.
Ya’ know, I actually agree with him; no more GOBP within the DC limits! ;D When shareholders had the chutzpah to inquire about all the political donations, Pirate Rupert had this to say:
In these two donations that you’re speaking of we judged it to be in the best interests of the company; it had nothing to do with the editorial policies, or the journalism, uh, or the films or anything else.
I can’t believe his tongue didn’t go screaming out of his pie hole due to the toxic environment because he dared to use the word "journalism" in describing his little company!
When one of the shareholders got yet MORE chutzpah & had the audacity to want more disclosures as far as NewsCorp political contributions, Pirate Rupert said,
We’ll consider it from time to time. I don’t believe we’ll be doing it again but we’ll see.
AND, when asked if shareholders would have a role IN that disclosure process, Pirate Rupert replied,
No. Sorry, you have the right to vote us off the board if you don’t like it.
Wow, lucky Chris Hayes gets to follow Pirate Rupert. The NewsCorp money people defer to management. O...K... Chris made a great point! What does change in Washington have to do with the Republican Governors’ Association? Well, ya’ know, I just thought of an answer. This year is a census year, boys & girls which means gerrymandering of Congressional districts. And, guess who can wield that veto pen if the new districts are not drawn to someone’s liking? GOVERNORS, BABY! So, the more GOBP governors you have, the more gerrymandered GOBP Congressional districts you’ll have.
** Keith’s newest book is in stock at Amazon. GOODY! That means I can expect my personally autographed by the Keithster himself copy very soon, right? RIGHT??!! ;D Children in India are being tossed off balconies into a big ‘ol trampoline thing. ALL RIGHT! The Apple Daily peeps have offered their take on Bretty "Should I Stay, or Should I Go, but Look at These Pictures of my Gentleman’s Area First!" Favre! And, some poor cartoon lady’s behind got burned by freakin’ lasers coming from Brett’s head. ;D **
#3 "Tempest in a Tea Party" AKA "Strange Brew" - 33 tea bagger candidates are in what are considered to be in toss – up races. Yea, and if they win, we’ll all be tossing up, retching up, etc.! Oh goody, here’s footage of the "debate" in NV last night. Did Sharron Angle actually say "Americanism", or am I hearing things? While Ms. Sharron was a NV state legislator, she actually SUPPORTED insurance mandates. Now? Not so much... Rand Paul is worried that kids in kindergarten will learn about lesbians, I guess. Oh man, we get Bat$hit Bachmann, too? Rep. Joe Barton’s made very clear that he’s fired up & ready to lead the House energy committee that he apologized to Tony Hayward from. YEA! HEY!! It’s E.J. Dionne – long time no see!! I like him A LOT. HA! She DID say Americanism; I’m NOT losing it – at least in this respect. ;D Are you sparkin’ kidding me?! Less than a week after Carl "Bestiality? Good! Gays? BBBbbbbAAAAaaaaDDDddddd" rant, he has the GALL to call out Andrew Cuomo for not doing enough to boost gay rights????!!!!
Wow, on some level, you almost have to respect that chutzpah.
WPITW – A NJ CVS employee refused an inhaler to a customer in the middle of an asthma attack because he was a couple bucks short to be able to pay for another one. Some FAUX News dude did some pollster work for the Anti – US Chamber of Commerce, and he got to talk about the HORRIBLE disservice being done to said chamber on FAUX News today. Brian Kilmeade thinks all terrorists are Muslims. Wow...he really REALLY said that.
Fridays With Thurber "The Catbird Seat" Do I remember this story? Nope, I’m not remembering this one.
