Hi. I'm a volunteer for Reid's campaign, here in Las Vegas (I'm now letting on TMI about who I am--especially considering the popularity of some of my comments), and the Senator came into the call office for a visit today. He wore a well tailored dark suit and the friendliest smile I've ever laid eyes on. His happiness and gratitude were more than evident. I realized that I'm in politics far too deep when taking a picture with him. I walked up, shook his hand and told him it was a genuine honor. In response he asked my name and the camera flashed right after I replied. Then the moment was over. I continued to watch Sen Reid as he took a pic with everyone else in the room who wanted one. The man was warm, cordial and even funny.
We had all put down our phones when someone announced his arrival except one. That person had just dialed and had to stay on the line. For a change it wasn't a "not home". Sen Reid walked right across to this woman and indicated he wanted the phone. The woman told the caller "I'll let him tell you. Here's Sen Reid." Harry seemed truly delighted as he introduced himself to the listener and that he appreciates his/her support. After a short conversation he hung up and turned to us.
Harry then told us how thankful he is for our efforts. He told us a bit of his upbringing in Searchlight, what his house was like, and his parents. He then spoke of the living conditions "that woman" claims he lives in now. "Have you ever seen a penthouse on the 2nd floor?" We all laughed. Harry told us about his "Penthouse" being a one bedroom place on the 2nd floor. He also told us that she's soon putting out a series of commercials attacking his children.
Sharonnnnn is a real piece of work. She loves her God, the very one who spoke of being humble and turning the other cheek, so much that she's willing to attack his children for votes. Ah, can you feel the love?
So Reid then went on to tell us that these polls can't, by law, randomly call cell phones. I didn't know that. But it means that a good deal of the populace has not been getting polled (I think that we all knew). His internal polls show we're ahead by a few points and headed for a win. That's right, you heard it here first.
He spoke a bit about the linking of Nevada's power grid. He told us pretty much the same thing he told everyone during the connection ceremony.
"The hundreds of Nevadans who will work on this line will help us unleash Nevada's clean-energy potential, and will help us connect the northern and southern ends of our state," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. "These are good-paying jobs that can never be outsourced. This line will soon start to employ Nevadans, and it will always employ Nevadans."
This occurs just a few days after early voting begins. Thanks for the persuasion material, Harry.
Sen Reid spoke of other things, too, but stumbled when thanking us, again, for our support. He said that words could never convey what's in his heart so just left it at "Thank you". Then we took pictures.
He warmly greeted everyone as we came up and as the photographers took the pictures. One lady told him something that he lit up about and said that he remembered that. It was evident he actually did, too.
It was a remarkable visit from an old man. Harry is old, I hope he makes it to the 112th, but still vibrant and engaged. I did notice that his eyes didn't scan the room much, while he spoke, but tended to look down. I know many will claim that's because Reid was faking but I don't believe so. He seemed genuine to me, regardless. Also, when he did look up, he usually shot a glance toward my crotch (not true, politics doesn't excite me that much). He's not like St. Nick old but he walks pretty slow.
Steve Sibellius (sp) was there and I got to meet him, too. He was surprised when I told him how much I love seeing him on Nevada Week In Revue, on PBS, but it made him pretty happy. He was with someone else who's name I don't recall.
We all then hit the phones or pavement. It was a good day.
