The so called "fishermen" of Taiji, Japan, now known to the world due to The Cove currently are holding a very large pod of bottlenose dolphins and a smaller pod of risso's dolphins. The combined total is about 50-60 dolphins.
They are slated to die within the next several hours as daylight is fast approaching in Japan. They will be slaughtered for food as if they are nothing but big fish. If they are very "lucky" a few will spend the rest of their miserable lives in dolphinariums.
I am asking you to call or visit your Japanese embassy/consulate right now. The number for the embassy in D.C. is 202-238-6700. You can find all the embassies and consulates right here. They will at the very least take down your message and information. Ask them not to kill the dolphins in Taiji.
Pressure is starting to get through. Even some Japanese that supported the slaughter are now demanding that the mothers and calves are saved- this is due to the demands of the activists. One candidate for the office of local government issuing the permits to kill dolphins now even opposes the slaughter, and a meeting is to take place in Taiji to discuss the issue where even the western activists have been invited.
I will write a proper diary on this after the election, since no one here is likely to care at this point. Keep the pressure on them.
Report from Taiji
UPDATE: All of the dolphins have been killed, including the mothers and the babies.
