Last week, I walked out of the bathroom and told my husband I had this fantasy while taking a shower. He raised his head and excitedly said..."Oh?"
I laughed and said "It is not what you think! My fantasies are turning to the possibilities of what could happen in the election in a few weeks!"
You see, our local newspaper had just put dire statistics on the Sunday front page about how Roy Blunt was going to stomp Robin Carnahan, and become our next MO Senator. I felt sick to my stomach.
The poll results felt skewed to me, because they don't call people with cellphones. I know lots of people who don't have landlines anymore. I would imagine that folks who still have them are over 30-35. So, I wonder how the polls we see today can be accurate if they are based upon land-liners only? I know 25-30 people from all age ranges who only have cellphones.
So, I had this "Fantasy" that there MUST be a lot of people who are going to vote Democrat who are not being asked about it in the poll-taking madness. I fantasized that college students would get out again and support the Democratic cause, and the African-American Community are going to go out in droves to support our President again in 2010.
My sweet husband told me I was living in a pipe-dream and that we were doomed to another two years of Republican's doing nothing to help Americans out. Might as well give up he said.
I told him I'm not giving up just yet. That poll motivated me to DO SOMETHING. So, I volunteered for the Robin Carnahan campaign. I picked up my signs from her headquarters, and I gave more money than I could afford to help her out. I told them I would go canvassing on October 30th...door to door.
But, as I put up my Robin Carnahan sign, I noticed there were NO Roy Blunt signs on my street. There were five Carnahan signs, but No Roy Blunts? I live on a block where Bush/Cheney/McCain/Palin signs outnumbered the Democrats 2-1 every election cycle. Not only are there NO Roy Blunt signs, there are NO Republican signs on my street for any office. Very unusual for such a right-wing street as this one.
Then, I took a two mile walk around the neighborhood, and I only saw two Roy Blunt signs in a two mile radius. We are a pretty liberal area, but we do have a fair amount of Republicans around here...so no Roy Blunt signs hardly anywhere seemed even more unusual. I figured people would get around to putting them up this last week. But, they have not appeared as yet.
I started feeling more optimistic this week. Maybe those polls are skewed? My fantasy about there being a full-fledged underground of Democrats out there ready to vote on 11/2 began to grow a tiny bit.
So, I told Sweet-Hubby that I was going to canvas door-to-door on the 30th. He was not happy, and tried to discourage me, but I was adamant about doing it. So, he capitulated and agreed to help me out and volunteer too.
So, off we went... canvassing door to door yesterday. They assigned us to a well-kept working-class neighborhood lined with brick bungalows. We knew we were probably going to be talking to Democrats already, so our task was to make sure they would get out and go vote. To have conversations if they wanted, or to leave information if they weren't home. We weren't sure what to expect at 10:00 am on a Saturday morning.
We knocked on 47 doors in an 8-9 block area. My pedometer read 2.11 miles when we were finished. A lot of people did not answer their doors, or weren't home. But, we did manage to talk to about 1/3 of the people on our list. Most of the people we spoke to had either already voted are were definitely voting on Tuesday. We spoke to a lot of African-Americans, and they were ALL going out to vote because they were going to support our President...intimating that they had his back. They were excited! They got me excited.
Then, when we came home and tuned into the Sanity Rally and saw so many progressives turn out...my fantasy grew even larger.
I am taking these examples as positive signs that the MSM punditry may need to eat crow after the election is over.
I am hoping that my fantasy turns into a reality.
Cheers to all of those who are trying to make that happen!
