NEWTON- Congressman Barney Frank today received the endorsement of Edward McCormick, III – his Republican opponent in the 1992 election. Mr. McCormick and Congressman Frank engaged in a series of robust, but respectful and focused debates in the 1992 election cycle.

In his statement, Mr. McCormick said the following:
Perhaps it's not every day in politics that a former opponent endorses Congressman Barney Frank. However, these are not ordinary times and as a Republican I'm proud to support Barney Frank for reelection because of his leadership, commitment, and willingness to always hold true to his principles.
Barney and I debated the issues of the day in 1992. That was during a different political climate; we could discuss issues, disagree, and stay rational. While times may have changed, I know from my own conversations with Barney, that he is eager to engage on any issue that affects the people of this District. He has time and again demonstrated his knowledge of the things that matter most to all of us. He has often spoken of the need "to reach across the aisle" to get the job done and not let politics get in the way. I know that when anyone needs help Congressman Frank is there and always will be, this is why I am supporting Barney and is the reason I ask you to do so as well.
I do not think I'm the only Republican who admires Barney for speaking his mind without first looking at the most recent poll. We may not agree on all of the issues, but I support Barney because you know where he stands, says what he really thinks and is there to help all of the people. Barney Frank has been there for us and as his former Republican opponent I am proud to endorse him for re-election on Tuesday November 2, 2010.
