I would like to thank everyone who has participated in GOTV efforts, whether you have made phone calls, knocked on doors, used the Facebook Commit to Vote Challenge app to reach your friends, etc. I was able to call voters over the weekend for OFA and the Sestak campaign directly, and today my wife and I will proudly cast our votes for Democrats.
No matter what happens today, we will keep fighting.
Whether we win or lose, we will keep fighting. If we keep both houses of Congress, we will keep fighting. If we lose the House and the Senate, we will keep fighting.
No matter what the results turn out to be, we will keep fighting, because progress requires a continuous struggle.
We have so many issues to make progress on, and we have gotten off to a start on many of them. Equal rights for the LGBT community as far as their right to marry, openly serve in the military, and live lives free of fear and intimidation. Equal rights for the Hispanic community to have a path to citizenship for those who seek it and to be able to walk the streets without fear of being undeservedly stopped by the police.
Because of what we accomplished in 2008 and what we have fought for since then, we have gotten a large foot in the door to healthcare for all. We have stopped the severe hemorrhaging of jobs and have saved and created many since then. Our financial system still remains vulnerable to instruments of destruction, but we made happen a large first step in creating a new regulatory framework to keep our economy safer from collapse.
I've resigned myself to the fact that progress is a lifelong struggle. I will never be able to stop fighting to make the world a better place for those who live in it and for the future of our children. That is my job, and I take it on with much pride.
If the Democrats receive the predicted drubbing, don't let that take away your spirit. Keep fighting. Keep making calls and knocking on doors. Keep working for the America that you wish to see, that you know is possible.
And let's not forget to keep fighting the Tea Party, AKA the "fascism that has come to America draped in a flag and waving a cross" (paraphrasing, but I believe it to be true in this day and age). I look forward to the day that they crawl back under the rock from whence they came. The world is changing, and so are the demographics of America, and I am loving it!
