Governor Martin O'Malley, "We move forward, not back"
UPPER MARLBORO: Democrats in Maryland have directed a lot of their GOTV efforts this election cycle towards Prince George's County, an area that President Obama carried with almost 89% of the vote in 2008. Several Democratic candidates, including Governor O'Malley, held a rally in Upper Marlboro late Monday night, making one final push in PG County to urge supporters to vote and volunteer.
We were the first ones to report that Prince George's County was outperforming the rest of the state in turnout. It was a trend we noticed just halfway through the first day of early voting. I asked Congresswoman Donna Edwards and Susie Turnbull, the Chair of the Maryland Democratic Party, why the early vote turnout was so strong in PG County at last night's rally. Turnbull told us the high numbers were due to "A very strong effort to make people aware of it. It was an education process." Strong turnout in this County is surely a good sign for the Democrats.
I also spoke with Congresswoman Donna Edwards about Citizens United and whether we missed the opportunity to do something about it in the last session of Congress. "I think it wasn't very clear, frankly, how badly this would play out, but now all the evidence is there... We cannot go into 2012 with the kind of election cycle we've had here for 2010."
