At this writing I can't tell from Kos's updates how this night is going. The Repubs have picked up House seats but are they on trajectory for a "huge" victory? Have the Blue Curs been decimated (hopefully!)?
However the night turns out, it looks like there will be fewer but hopefully better Democrats (collectively) in Congress. So now we can concentrate on what's next.
Herewith two modest proposals:
Stick a Thumb in the Eye of Koch
or: Kill the Bush Tax Cuts.
This should be a no-brainer and it's rather appalling that any Democrat, even a Blue Dog, would even consider compromise. But this also should be relatively easy: enough Democrats of the non-Cur variety will survive in the Senate to block anything they choose. And what better thing to block than Republicans trying to reward their paymasters? In fact, Senate Democrats should make it the Prime Directive to frustrate anything that favors the Koch brothers, the Foreign Agent Chamber of Commerce, and anything to do with more giveaways to the energy lobby.
If any Beltway Milktoasts (like Broder) snivel about being partisan, well, Republicans are already planning to do something similar to Democrats.
Make Violin strings out of the Catfood Commission Cats
I've heard some pundits saying the next Big Event will be the early December report of the Catfook Commission. What we need here is for a few progressive Democrats to pre-emptively point out the obvious: the antics of Simpson has irredeemibly contaminated the decision-making process of the Commission, and as far as we're concerned, whatever recommendations it makes are dead in the water. This may be a moot point anyway, since the smart money has it that the Commission is now too polarized to come out with anything, give their rules. But dismissing them even before any report comes out will have the bracing effect of putting the Villagers into a tizzy, never a bad thing for progressives to be doing.
It would be great if the White House backed these initiatives, even in secret, but it probably won't. No matter, if a few good Progressives can band together and form a Rejectionist Bloc, we could cancel out the Republican plans and wipe the grins off the Teabagger faces for the next two years.
