Dear Congressional Progressive Caucus,
One bright spot in the news recently for me was reading you are now a plurality of House Democrats.
Due to extensive losses by conservative and moderate Democrats, another shift in power occurred in the House last night besides Republicans taking the majority. The Congressional Progressive Caucus has replaced the Blue Dogs and the New Democrats as the plurality ideological caucus among House Democrats. For the first time ever, the CPC is larger than Blue Dogs and New Dems combined.
Considering the fact that the Republicans now control the House, but we have a Democratic president, I realize there will be times when you face even more immense pressure to compromise on important issues for the sake of passing legislation than you have before.
In the past some of you may have faced criticism for compromising. Obviously now circumstances have changed, and in order for the House to get things done many of you will need to compromise at some point.
I may not be thrilled about it, but I promise I will try not to hold it against you.
Just please don't give up on any of the things that you stand for right now. As much as you can, keep the Republicans from throwing out babies with the bathwater. Please don't stop being the Congressional Progressive Caucus just to get things done. Don't move to the right a centimeter more than you have to.
Please also support Nancy Pelosi as Minority Leader. She did a great job getting lots of progressive legislation passed that stalled in the Senate. She also did a great job getting lots of other legislation passed that made it through the Senate at a time when that was a practical impossibility. She is a stalwart ally who we should not allow to be pilloried due to her unpopularity with our opponents.
And finally, please do your best to point out when the Republicans and their policies actively harm our citizens. Please don't go out on to the House floor with big signs shouting hysterically, but please do keep on pointing it out in public. I promise I will help get the message out to everyone I know.
Thanks from someone who thinks you're largely pretty awesome most of the time. Glad you've been around in Congress and will be for the next two years.
