Oh noes, Obama is doomed and so is our Democratic party.
You know how I know this, John Boehner said so. You see, Republicans now control the House, so they control everything. Wait, I say, but don't we have another part of Congress that also controls the purse strings, the Senate? Oh wait, no, the Democrats have control of that. But wait, doesn't the president have any say on the direction we go, and by golly gee, he's on our side too. So the House is going to kill HCR? That'd be a pretty nifty trick by itself, are they going to pass and enact the repeal by themselves? Is the Senate going to join them with 5 people switching votes? Is Barack going to sign it into law?
How about Financial reform? The Stimulus? Oh wait, they'd need a pretty big shift to acomplish those too. But maybe 20 Democrats are going across the aisle to override vetoes of those too? So what exactly are the Republicans crowing about, and 75% of Democrats freaking out about? Obama saying he'd take some of their ideas on the tax cuts? The fact that now the Republicans can either join the discussion on solutions that both the Democratic Senate and President must OK instead of the namby pamby whining of the past 2 years of claiming to be blocked out? From where I stand, that's a good thing (not ideal, but good). You see, it takes a real mental midget to crow about how much power they weild when they have none. Because now failure to do what can not logically happen is entirey on them. They said they could do it, knowing they do not have the power to. So who do they blame when they can't? Do they get a free pass by saying that they couldn't get it past Obama or the Senate? But wait, they knew this when they crowed they WOULD do it, it was never hidden.
Not much of a diary, to be honest, but all the handwringing over stuff that can't logically come to pass is really getting on my last nerve. I thought it was the tea "partiers" that excelled in fantasy scenerios. Buck up, we control 2/3rds of the countries power structure (leaving out those "non political, rascally Supremes for the moment, since they can only pass laws on occasion). We got outspent by close to 5-1, and they are claiming the world they can't deliver, and they are leaving themselves no one to blame when we watch as they pass meaningless bunk on top of meaningless bunk. Seriously, try to find one thing they've promised they can deliver on? Find one reason why having them promising to accomplish this stuff is a bad thing. Heck, name one thing worse about having these guys in than those blue dogs (who took the biggest beating for their cause). They've given themselves no paddle, they are cornered and are somehow too stupid to realize it. Let's not be the same way. Try to remember that they are no longer able to play the helpless bystander, yes, it's true Obama has stated he will work with them (which, mind you, is the same exact thing he said 2 years ago). Obama and Congress got a lot of the heavy lifting done already. And the groundwork is already laid for more. Is this Republican House going to fight repeal of DADT after the Obama Administration fought the lawsuit in order to give the military time to implement it? On what grounds, when the brass says it's a go and will cause no problems? And how will the American people feel when they fight it, as they become more and more accepting of inclusion by the day?
I guess we'll have to watch as the next 2 years plays out, but truly, there is nothing that got done the past 2 years that is in danger, and now it has time to work without the burden of being the only ones in charge. It's not going to be easy short term, but if we believe what we did was right, and that the groundwork was solid, then we have nothing to worry about. It's all tough talk without any means of actually delivering.
In the end, if the Democrats only lost 30 seats, the end result wouldn't have been much different on the politics front, as the Blue dogs left would have been emboldened to buck things more. All they can do now is disappoint, it's actually shocking they don't realize it. I am not all that alarmed.
