This story on CNN was brought to my attention by a friend.
Now, I sincerely doubt that with few extreme exceptions there is much opposition to the idea of free speech on here. I can say that free speech is good until I'm blue in the face, and I'll freely note that a lot of what I may or may not find to be objectionable is, in fact, legal. I accept this as part of living in a free society.
That said, there are and always have been limits on personal freedom. This sort of material appears to cross those limits, as what we have here is a corporation profiting from a guide to sexual abuse of minors. According to the CNN story, the book promotes what is, in fact, legally molestation under Washington State law, where Amazon is located.
Free speech is fine. Promoting heinous criminal activity is not, and in fact violates Amazon's listing policy as noted in the CNN story:
Pornography, offensive material and "titles which may lead to... illegal activity" are among the prohibited content listed in the guidelines.
Per its listing (and per the CNN story), this book would seem to cross such lines as Amazon has openly set out for itself (per the relevant Washington State statutes), and yet Amazon is sending out form letters defending keeping the book on display. Therefore, its listing is both disgusting and hypocritical of Amazon. There are not many things deserving of a boycott for being put up for sale, but a boycott is the least that Amazon deserves for permitting this sort of thing to be posted for sale.
Edit: I'm not going to alter the above in the interests of being honest about what I said. With that said,as per CNN, the book has been pulled.
Edit 2 (4:12 AM GMT): Per a friend (which is hearsay, obviously, and I can't confirm it), the book is still up there but Amazon is having traffic issues. I can neither confirm nor deny.
