We all know the 2010 elections were frightening – not just the outcome but the process. Unlimited, undisclosed outside spending – compliments of our conservative Supreme Court – broke 5:1 in favor of conservatives.
The corporate money sector is taking over our government. The problem isn’t Big Brother. It’s Big Brother, Inc.
Of course that’s the tag line for my novel, 2044.
Sadly (thankfully?), my novel received a wonderful reviewfrom writer/publisher Deborah Emin while I was on the road knocking on doors trying to eke out some votes the old fashioned way (I lost).
She called my book "extraordinary." Lotke "nailed us and what we are fighting for right now in the most and best Orwellian terms."
My book follows our current social and economic trajectory to the extreme – set in a world of consolidated multi-national corporations, mass produced culture and too much stuff. Our hero can be summoned by his office at any time on any day via an electric shock implanted in his thigh.
But the story is simple. Our hero discovers a cheap, easy way to take the salt out of seawater. Fresh water is scarce enough right now. By the year 2044, people will die and countries will go to war for water. A microorganism that takes the salt out of seawater could benefit literally billions of people – but it also threatens business interests who are happy the way things are.
The reviewer concludes: "It is exciting and compelling and guides us to asking the basic question: what would we do? And by following what happens when you choose to fight and to get the answers you need, he also shows us what is at stake if we act and what happens when we don’t."
You can buy the book or download it for free.
But please don’t treat it like a prediction. It’s a warning. I don’t expect it to turn out that way ... and (recent downturns notwithstanding) I’m still fighting to see that it doesn’t.
Buy the book. Have a nice day.
