Hi kiddies....got nothing to do on this Friday night? Put on your dancing shoes---and join in with us on the Gulf Watchers Friday Night Block Party. (I promise NO Obama-bashing here at all)
Haven't been here before? Well---then you are in for some fun.
This is a community that came together, as we watched the horror unfold in the Gulf--and we continue to monitor all other related events.
On Fridays, we do songs, some dancing, some cute humor, and lots of other useless things--like talking about your pet---be it a dog, a cat or significant other....
Let's take it slow & easy--first a drink:
Tonight to open--a fine wine:
A.R. Lenoble 1996 Blanc de Blanc Champagne
Region: France
Producer:
Vintage: 1996
Size: 750ml
"This is intense, concentrated and refined. Peach, honeysuckle, toast and mineral aromas and flavors meld beautifully with the vibrant structure and supple texture. The harmony of all the elements and intensity of flavor make this Champagne a standout. Drink now through 2015. Wine Spectator
Price:$79.99 (Too rich for me--I'll take a cheap zifindel)
Now onto the show---remember the theme? Forgot already?
DANCING!!
Selections below the fold....
Here are some wonderful dance themes from years past---
Long ago--in Europe & early America, we had the Waltz--a favorite of the well-to-do (A little extra movement there, but you get the gist...)
Much later came another style. How many remember the
Foxtrot?
Sure goes back before my time---and I'm no youngster..
And then there was the
Charleston
Don't remember that one either---but it was THE Craze just before our last Depression....
Now some liked the Tango.
That was pretty sexy, no? Surely better than Bristol Palin--UGH!!
Of course--many liked Fred doing his thing (Love his outfit)
Old friend John Travolta took it to another level
Whew, OK---you're probably ready for another drink by now huh?
How about an Apple Martini??
1 Granny Smith apple sliced (for garnish)
2 cups sweet and sour mix
1 1/2 cups vodka
1 2/2 cups sweet and sour apple schnapps.
ice cubes
6 thirsty guests!
Instructions
Fill your pitcher half way with ice cubes. Add all ingredients except apple slices and stir gently till mixed. Strain into chilled martini glasses and garnish with a slice of apple.
Something different. Refreshing. On with the dancing.....
Did you know that the '40's had their own Breakdancing?
Pretty neat----and some of you who did it in recent years thought YOU were cool--ha!!!
During that '40's & Fifties, there was the Boogie-Woogie, a very big favorite. (Still seen on your local PBS fund-raising shows)
But as we got to the period where many of us grew up there was Rock 'n Roll
Those were the early days---when we listened to Elvis
Rock 'n Roll brought along all sorts of mew dances....
Some were silly...the Hully Gully Ugh!! Even though the song by the Olympics was cool.
There were many others--How about the Swim?
Or the Wah-Watusi...?
There were others--the Mashed Potato and many other neat versions.
Of course, we can't forget the Twist
There are many, many more that are out there--I know Rubyr has a very neat video of "dancing" if you will---I found it fascinating.
So I'll leave it to you to come up with your favorites----and I DO expect you to do so.
Also add your favorite dancers---people like Ann Miller,
Gene Kelly, Fred & Ginger---even Rudolf Nureyev---and whoever else you remember.
Some of you may even like Square Dancing----UGH!!
Brings back terrible memories of me fumbling my way thru square dance routines in PHYS ED classes during middle school years!!! What were they thinking???
Me ---I still like cheek to cheek And, I don't mean Ass-to-Ass!!!!
**********
I like to have a bit of remembrance in my Block Party---so on that note, here are a couple of notable Births that took place on November 12:
Neal Young was born on this day in 1946---you remember this song of his--Heart of Gold
Also Brian Hyland, Queens, New York, rocker, who had this goody--
Sealed with a Kissborn in 1943.
And, in 1917, this guy was born:Joseph Coors, CEO, Adolph Coors Co Brewery; who brought us this:
Gorgeous Grace Kelly was born this day 80 years ago
(Will someone tell me how Cary Grant got that low in the front seat to kiss her?)
Sadly--we lost a couple of notables also:
Eve Arden died at 82 this day in 1992Remember Our Miss Brooks?
Ah, the days of simple comedy.
Baseball Hall of Famer Bill Dickey also died on Nov 12, in 1993 at age 86. He was the greatest Yankee (ugh) catcher of All-Time
OK---on with the show......step lively, folks...ah one, ah two, ah three......
**************
Three notes---PLEASE NO POSTING OF PHOTOS OR VIDEOS--POST LINKS ONLY PLEASE; IT REALLY HELPS THOSE ON LOW BANDWITH---AND THE FLOW OF THE THREAD IS SO MUCH SMOOTHER.
Two--I'll be doing another Block Party in 3 weeks---and the theme will be on "duende"---look it up. A clue: Tony Hayward doesn't have it..
NUMBER 3---I'll have a surprise about shirts.....later...stick around!!
