Today I woke up to the latest GOP abomination. Evidently Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona has vowed to torpedo President Obama's New Start nuclear arms treaty with Russia. Because, after all, Kyl's boss Mitch McConnell has made it clear that defeating President Obama in 2012 is more important than global peace. From the NY Times:
The treaty, which would force both countries to pare back nuclear arsenals and resume mutual inspections that lapsed last year for the first time since the cold war, is the centerpiece of two of Mr. Obama’s signature goals: restoring friendly relations with Russia and putting the world on a path toward eventually eliminating nuclear arms. A failure to ratify the treaty could freeze both efforts and, some analysts said, undermine Mr. Obama’s credibility on the world stage.
Can Kyle somehow be convinced to put peace above politics?
The German-British writer and TV personality Charlotte Roche has come up with a novel ideato push back on nukes in Germany:
Charlotte Roche, a German anti-nuclear activist has offered to have sex with President Christian Wulff if he blocks legislation to extend the life span of Germany's 17 nuclear reactors.
Roche is a star German television presenter and has won a number of journalism awards. She made her offer in an interview with Der Spiegel magazine.
"I offer to go to bed with him (Wulff) if he does not sign the legislation," said Roche.
Continuing, Roche said that she had discussed the offer with her husband and that he was happy for her to have sex with President Wulff in return for refusing to sign.
The legislation would extend the life of Germany’s 17 atomic reactors up to 12 years beyond the present phasing out deadline of 2020 set by a former government.
Would a similar offer possibly sway Jon Kyl? It's worth a try!
Granted, the thought is not terribly appetizing, but saving the planet demands sacrifice. So who is willing to step up to the plate and offer to sleep with Kyl or one of his GOP colleagues?
(Note: given the number of closeted gay Republican men, we should not just limit the pool to females)
