Doing their best imitation of Scrooge, House Republicans this afternoon killed a Democratic effort to expedite consideration of extending unemployment compensation for the two million Americans who will otherwise lose it on December 1. Their objection is that it's not paid for. Of course, tax cuts for multi-millionaires don't need to be paid for, and wars don't need to be paid for, and a Medicare prescription drug benefit advanced by a Republican President doesn't need to be paid for, but if somebody dares to suggest that unemployed Americans during a period of high unemployment shouldn't get their benefits cut off at the beginning of the winter, THAT'S got to be paid for.
I trust that none of the people who voted Republican earlier this month are unemployed or having any unemployed friends or family members, because if they are, they just got a lump of coal in their Christmas stocking.
