Some of you didn't vote in November. I guess you were busy. Halloween was crazy, and then it seemed like there was barely enough time to plan Thanksgiving. Now we're approaching the nation's most sacred shopping excuse, and I bet you're too busy to read this.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced this morning that Republicans will block any legislation from coming to the Senate floor until two key economic issues are addressed: funding the government (the "continuing resolution" which must pass to prevent a government shutdown) and the extension of the Bush-era tax cuts.
You read that right. These schmucks are so arrogant, they are telling the world that they will shut down our government (again) if they don't get an extension on tax breaks for their super rich funders. Has there ever been a more blatant example of elected leaders screwing over low income and middle class Americans simply to satisfy the wealthy patrons who provide the lifestyle they feel they deserve?
You can fool yourself into thinking that Republican Rhetoric makes sense. You can lie to yourself and say that fairly taxing the richest 2% of our nation will somehow discourage some unspecified national spirit. But I see BS and I'm calling it BS. This is an obvious and grotesque misuse of power in Washington to sway legislation in favor of people who already own everything. They got rich thanks to the nation they now refuse to pay back. They got richer by breaking the rules. Now they don't want to pay taxes, and if we let them, they will get another huge break that middle class people desperately need right now.
Even if you earn a six-figure annual income, you are in the American middle class. You are nowhere near the top 2% of our population and you never will be. Let me say that again. You never will be. So if you're supporting this Republican tantrum because you think someday you might be one of the super rich, and you will want to keep all the money you have earned or stolen, so you'd better help the GOP pave the way for a future paradise when you're famous and filthy rich and won't want to pay taxes--then you're just an idiot.
Going along with Republicans in Congress right now is the most self-destructive thing an American can do. If you let them, these bullies will steal the few health care benefits you've started to gain, and they will make you pay more taxes so their rich friends don't have to. That's all there is to it.
Are you pissed off yet? You should be. Call or email your senators and tell them what you want.
