America is off the plantation, out of the fields and orchards, gone from the factories and Glenn Beck, Fox News and the Right are scared to death.
Yesterday morning I was channel surfing and happened upon Senator Jim DeMint talking about our “Christian” nation. I only caught the tail end of his talk, however it was followed by a group selling CD’s, with more information about our “Christian Nation”. What got my attention was the pitchman mentioning David Barton’s name as one of the scholars on the CD. Barton is the Chancellor of Beck University. All of you graduates of Beck U out there, beware – you’re diploma may not be worth the slander, lies, half-truths and innuendo that it’s predicated on – Chancellor Barton may also be a fraud. Mr. Barton is really just another frightened evangelical minister from Texas, with no history or law credentials, and his books that you purchased – look at the title pages – they’re self-published. So, friend, you and I can also be Historians if we can just scrape together enough money to print some books.
There was something about the look in Jim DeMint’s eyes that I recognized. I’ve seen that look in Rand Paul’s eyes, in Lou Dobb’s eyes, in Dick Armey’s eyes, in Bill Bennett’s eyes, in Michele Bachman’s eyes and in the gaze of so many more American conservatives. These people are afraid of America. America has become Glenn Beck’s and the Right’s worst nightmare – The United States Of America. If July 4th is really more than hot dogs and fireworks and if Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Samuel Adams, et al. were truly founding fathers and patriots – why do we need Fox News and Glenn Beck? We are all truly equal – we don’t need fools, charlatans, and just plain, mean people, equivocating on the meaning of the Declaration of independence or the Constitution.
Blacks, Latinos, Homosexuals, Hindus, Musicians, Artists, Plumbers, Skateboarders, Buddhists, Vegans, Muslims and Wrestlers are running “created equal” through the streets of America. It’s a regular “Declaration of Independence” Extravaganza! – except if you’re a Glenn Becker or a Fox News Devotee, it’s the “mongrel” party that you’ve been warned about. The huge conundrum here for Glenn and the Right is that the “Founders” are throwing the damn thing and the dudes were of all things - Christians.
Here is where the right says, “Oh bother!”, calls me names, talks about small government and Ronald Reagan and asks me if I go to church - that ’s nobody’s stinken business but my own and it’s guaranteed in the Constitution. So why do we perennially get a bunch of half-assed educated “Christians” questioning the efficacy of our founding documents? They are not only afraid of America – they are afraid of Jesus Christ. They’re scared to death that he actually meant what he said. Therefore, we have to endure these nice people interpreting for us, ad nauseum, what Christianity is and what kind of Christians our founding fathers were. It’s all a bunch of bologna – these folks don’t have any answers – they don’t even have good questions. These people have set traps for themselves, stepped in them and are now angrily trying to gnaw all of our legs off.
Conservative Christians and Reaganites have indoctrinated an entire generation with a form of Christianity that is almost entirely divorced from the teachings of Jesus Christ. Glenn Beck and Fox are the natural consequence of this heresy. Jesus was a Socialist. He cared deeply for his fellow man. I am a Christian and I am a Capitalist and I know the difference. The Conservative Right has blurred the lines.
The Christ that I came to know as a child was all about love, forgiveness and freedom from fear. The Conservative Religious Right is based almost entirely on commerce, xenophobia and fear – they are re-crucifying Jesus - wanting him to return in their image.*
